What this result does not account for

  • Inherits all the uncertainty of the due date it starts from.
  • Cannot resolve conception to a single day outside IVF or a single known exposure.
  • Assumes a term pregnancy dated by conventional methods.
Zero-Server Execution Updated 11 Aug 2026 Reviewed by Dr. Ayesha Rahman IEEE-754 Double Precision

In short: A due date of 14 April 2027 implies conception around 22 July 2026 — 266 days earlier. But the honest answer is a window of 17 to 23 July, because sperm survive up to five days and the date of intercourse is not the date of conception.

Formula

Conception = Due date − 266 days
Implied LMP = Due date − 280 days
Window = Conception − sperm survival … +1 day

Two clocks: 266 days from conception, 280 from the last period. The fortnight between them is the whole source of confusion.

Worked Example

  1. Start from the due date. 14 April 2027, whether from dates or from a scan.
  2. Subtract the fetal clock. 14 April 2027 − 266 days = 22 July 2026, the estimated conception.
  3. Subtract the gestational clock. 14 April 2027 − 280 days = 8 July 2026, the implied last period.
  4. Widen it honestly. Sperm survive five days, so intercourse from 17 to 23 July could have caused it.
  5. Refuse the false precision. A 7-day window is the answer. A single date would be a midpoint dressed up as a fact.

This page exists mainly to refuse a question. People arrive wanting a conception date, and outside IVF there is no such thing available: fertilisation can occur up to five days after intercourse, the egg lives less than a day, and the due date the calculation starts from carries its own error of five to seven days at best. Stack those together and the honest output is a window roughly a week wide. That is enough for the purposes people usually have — orientation, curiosity, understanding why the pregnancy is dated two weeks before it began. It is emphatically not enough to establish who the father is, and the page says so directly, because that is the use this calculation is most often put to and the one it cannot support.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Reports a window rather than implying false precision.
  • Separates the fetal and gestational clocks explicitly.
  • States plainly that the result cannot establish paternity.

Where it stops

  • Cannot narrow the window without LH testing or IVF records.
  • Not valid for pregnancies dated only by late ultrasound.

Risk & accuracy notice. This calculation cannot establish paternity and has no legal standing. The conception window spans about a week and the due date carries its own error of five to seven days at best; only DNA testing can determine parentage.

Practical Use Cases

Understanding when a pregnancy began

266 days before the due date, give or take a week either side of the midpoint.

Reconciling the two-week discrepancy

Gestational age counts from the last period, fetal age from conception. The gap is about 14 days.

Knowing when a test would have worked

Implantation is 6 to 12 days after conception, and testing before that cannot detect anything.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

This engine inverts the usual calculation, working backwards from a known due date to the conception that preceded it. Fetal age runs 266 days from conception to the due date, against the 280-day gestational convention measured from the last menstrual period, and the fourteen-day difference between those two clocks accounts for most of the confusion patients report about pregnancy dating. The engine deliberately presents the result as a window rather than a date. Fertilisation occurs when sperm meets egg, which may be up to five days after intercourse, while the egg itself survives only twelve to twenty-four hours after release; the interval between the act and the event is therefore unknown and irreducible. Compounding this, the due date the calculation starts from carries its own uncertainty of five to seven days when established by first-trimester ultrasound and considerably more thereafter. The engine states explicitly that the result cannot establish paternity and carries no legal weight, since that is the application it is most often sought for and the one the arithmetic cannot bear. In vitro fertilisation is identified as the sole exception, where fertilisation timing is known exactly and the due date follows from the transfer date. This calculator is an educational estimate and is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Cycle-based predictions assume regular ovulation and cannot account for irregular cycles, hormonal contraception, recent pregnancy or breastfeeding, thyroid or polycystic ovary syndrome, perimenopause, or any medication affecting the cycle. Dates produced here must not be used as contraception, and they do not establish paternity or any legal fact. A first-trimester ultrasound dates a pregnancy far more accurately than any calculation from a remembered period, and it takes precedence. Discuss results with a midwife or doctor. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Conception Calculator — 20 Expert FAQs

20 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

How do I calculate my conception date?

Subtract 266 days from the due date. For 14 April 2027 that gives 22 July 2026.

Why is it a window rather than a date?

Sperm survive up to five days, so intercourse days earlier can cause conception. The window here is 7 days wide.

Why 266 days and not 280?

280 counts from the last period, about two weeks before conception. 266 is the actual length from fertilisation.

Can this prove paternity?

No. The window is a week wide and the due date has its own error. Only DNA testing establishes paternity.

Is the intercourse date the conception date?

Not necessarily. Fertilisation can occur up to five days later, whenever the egg becomes available.

When does implantation happen?

Six to twelve days after fertilisation. Pregnancy hormone only appears afterwards.

When would a test turn positive?

From about 10 days after conception at the earliest, reliably around the date the period was due.

Why does the clinic say I am 4 weeks pregnant two weeks after conceiving?

Because gestational age counts from the last period, which precedes conception by about a fortnight.

Is IVF dating different?

Yes, and it is exact. A day-5 blastocyst transfer gives a due date of transfer plus 261 days.

How accurate is the due date I started from?

Within 5 to 7 days if set by first-trimester scan, and considerably less accurate if set later.

Does a longer cycle change this?

It changes the implied last period, since ovulation is later, but not the 266 days from conception.

Can I narrow the window?

Only with an LH-positive test, a known single exposure, or IVF. Otherwise the width is irreducible.

What is the difference between fetal and gestational age?

Fetal age counts from conception, gestational from the last period. They differ by about two weeks throughout.

When does the first trimester end?

Around 13 weeks of gestational age, which is roughly 11 weeks after conception.

Does implantation bleeding indicate the date?

Loosely. It occurs 6 to 12 days after fertilisation but many pregnancies have none at all.

Why do online calculators disagree?

Because some subtract 266 days and others 280, and some adjust for cycle length while others do not.

Is this conception calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, requires no account, and has no usage limits. ApexConverter is funded by contextual advertising, never by selling user data.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The engine runs as Vanilla JavaScript inside your browser under our Zero-Server Client-Side Execution model. Your figures are computed locally and are never transmitted, logged, or stored.

How accurate is this calculator?

It applies the standard closed-form formula in IEEE-754 double precision, rounding only at the display layer. The engine is reconciled against an independent reference implementation before release.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The interface is mobile-first with numeric keypad hints and is tested down to a 320-pixel viewport with no horizontal scrolling.
