What this result does not account for

  • Wilks was fitted to early-1990s data and systematically underscores heavier lifters, which is why the IPF replaced it in 2019.
  • Male and female scores use different polynomials and are not comparable with each other.
  • The formula does not distinguish raw from equipped lifting, nor tested from untested competition.
  • Age is not modelled; masters and junior adjustments require a separate McCulloch or Foster coefficient applied on top.
  • IPF GL Points are not calculated here because the coefficient sets available could not be validated against published examples.
  • Bodyweight is restricted to 40-200 kg: below that the polynomial is outside its fitted range and above roughly 202 kg it stops decreasing, which would score a heavier lifter higher for an identical total.

Both formulas divide a fixed numerator by a polynomial in bodyweight, so the coefficient falls as bodyweight rises. Wilks uses a fifth-degree polynomial fitted to early-1990s data; DOTS uses a fourth-degree fit to 2010-2018 results, and the lower degree is deliberate — it reduces the overfitting that made Wilks misbehave at very light and very heavy bodyweights.

Worked Example

  1. Select sex — the polynomials differ and the scores are not comparable across them.

  4. Read the Wilks score, then read the DOTS score beside it.
  5. If your federation ranks on DOTS or IPF GL, use that number and treat Wilks as history.

An 82.5 kg male with 220 / 150 / 240 kg totals 610 kg. The Wilks denominator at 82.5 kg is 746.42, giving a coefficient of 0.6699 and a score of 408.64 — the advanced band. DOTS scores the same lifter 413.55, a 4.9-point difference that grows at the bodyweight extremes.

Practical Use Cases

Comparing lifters across weight classes

This is the formula's actual job: deciding a best-lifter award when a 66 kg and a 105 kg competitor both had excellent days. Apply the same formula to both, and be aware that at those bodyweights Wilks and DOTS can genuinely disagree about who won.

Tracking your own progress while bodyweight changes

If you are gaining or cutting, raw total hides part of the story. A coefficient score separates strength gain from weight gain — a rising total at rising bodyweight can leave the score flat, which is worth knowing before you commit to another bulk.

Comparing against historical records

Pre-2019 rankings and most gym folklore are denominated in Wilks, so it remains the correct formula for that comparison. Converting an old Wilks record into DOTS is not meaningful; the scales are different and there is no conversion factor.

Deciding a weight class

The coefficient rises as bodyweight falls, so dropping two kilograms raises the score arithmetically. The tool shows exactly how much. The honest caveat is that the total rarely survives a cut intact, and a two-kilogram drop that costs ten kilograms of total is a net loss.

The Wilks coefficient is computed as 500 divided by the original 1994 fifth-degree polynomial in bodyweight, using Robert Wilks's published sex-specific constants. The implementation was verified against four independently published worked examples before release — 80 kg male with a 430 kg total (denominator 732.39, coefficient 0.683, score 293.56), 63 kg female with 295 kg (316.82), and 120 kg male with 750 kg (431.19) — all of which reproduce exactly. DOTS is computed from the 2019 fourth-degree polynomial fitted to 2010-2018 competition data. IPF GL Points are deliberately NOT computed: during verification the available coefficient sets failed to reproduce published worked examples, and this platform does not publish a figure that fails its own validation check. IPF GL is explained in prose and readers are directed to their federation for official scoring.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

Is Wilks still used in powerlifting?

Why was the Wilks formula replaced?

It was fitted to early-1990s competition data and developed a documented bias: heavier lifters were systematically underscored, so an elite 120 kg competitor could rank below an equally elite 74 kg competitor. Newer formulas were fitted to modern data with functional forms less prone to distortion at the extremes.

What is the difference between Wilks and DOTS?

Wilks uses a fifth-degree polynomial from 1990s data; DOTS uses a fourth-degree polynomial fitted to 2010-2018 competition results. The lower degree deliberately reduces overfitting at very light and very heavy bodyweights. The scores are close in the middle and diverge at the ends, and they are not convertible.

What are IPF GL Points?

The IPF's official scoring since May 2020, using an exponential form rather than a polynomial, with separate coefficient sets for raw and equipped lifting. The scale is entirely different — competitive scores run roughly 60 to 110 rather than 300 to 500 — so a GL number cannot be compared with a Wilks number directly.

Can men's and women's Wilks scores be compared?

No. The two sexes use different polynomials, and a 400 Wilks does not represent the same competitive standing for a man and a woman. Comparisons should be made within a sex. Anyone using cross-sex Wilks to settle an argument is misusing the formula.

Does losing weight improve my Wilks score?

Arithmetically yes, because the coefficient rises as bodyweight falls — this page shows the effect of a two-kilogram drop at your current total. In practice a cut usually costs total, and if the loss in kilograms lifted outweighs the coefficient gain, the score falls. Model it before committing to a class change.

What is the highest Wilks score ever recorded?

The highest recorded scores exceed 700, achieved by exceptional lightweight lifters, while most all-time record performances land in the 550-650 range. Scores at that level typically come from equipped lifting or untested federations, which is another reason a bare coefficient number needs context.

Can I calculate Wilks for a single lift?

Mechanically yes — the coefficient depends only on bodyweight, so you can apply it to a bench-only result, and bench-only meets do exactly that. But the bands and benchmarks people quote are for full three-lift totals, so a single-lift Wilks is not comparable against them.

Does Wilks account for age?

No. The base formula uses bodyweight and sex only. Masters and junior competitors are handled by applying a separate age coefficient — McCulloch or Foster — on top of the base score, which federations do explicitly rather than building it into the formula.

Does Wilks account for equipped versus raw lifting?

No, and that is one of its acknowledged weaknesses. Squat suits and bench shirts add substantial weight to a total, and Wilks scores an equipped total exactly as it scores a raw one. IPF GL Points introduced separate coefficient sets specifically to address this.

Why does bodyweight matter so much in powerlifting?

Because of the square-cube law. Muscular force scales roughly with cross-sectional area — a squared dimension — while bodyweight scales with volume, a cubed dimension. Heavier lifters therefore lift more in absolute terms but less per kilogram, and a simple total-divided-by-bodyweight ratio unfairly favours the light.

Should I use Wilks or DOTS to track my progress?

Whichever your federation uses, and then stay with it. The scales are not convertible, so switching mid-year produces an apparent jump or drop that reflects nothing about your lifting. For most lifters today that means DOTS or IPF GL; use Wilks when comparing against pre-2019 numbers.

Is a 400 Wilks good?

For a male lifter it sits in the advanced band and represents years of consistent training — a strong regional-level performance. For a female lifter, 400 is elite. The asymmetry is a property of the separate polynomials, not of the athletes, which is exactly why cross-sex comparison of these scores is meaningless.
