Average Calculator

The arithmetic mean — sum over count — with the spread beside it and the outlier doctrine that says when the average is lying.

What this result does not account for

  • Up to 50 values per entry.
  • Arithmetic mean only — no geometric or weighted mean.
  • The median prints as doctrine, not as a card (AS wave).

In short: 12, 15, 18, 22, 28: the sum is 95 across 5 values, so the mean is exactly 19. Feed it 3, 7, 9, 15, 100 and the mean jumps to 26.8 — above every value but one — while the middle value stays 9. When the mean and the middle diverge that far, the mean is describing the outlier, not the data.

Formula

mean = (x₁ + … + xₙ) ÷ n

mean × n = sum — the check that never fails

outlier tell: mean ÷ middle outside 0.8–1.2

[('95 ÷ 5', 'the canonical mean, exactly 19'), ('26.8 vs 9', 'one outlier, two stories'), ('0.8–1.2', 'the mean-vs-middle skew rule'), ('median', 'the robust middle — the companion tool')]

Worked Example

  1. Paste the values — commas or spaces both parse.
  2. Read the mean with its sum and count.
  3. Check the spread card for outlier shape.
  4. Skewed? Quote the middle value instead.
  5. Group percentages never average across sizes.

12, 15, 18, 22, 28 → 95/5 = 19 exactly. Outlier set 3, 7, 9, 15, 100 → mean 26.8 against a middle of 9 — the average stopped describing the data.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Outlier doctrine beside the arithmetic
  • Mean-times-count check printed live
  • List input that parses like a human types

Where it stops

  • No weighted mean
  • No import of datasets

Risk & accuracy notice. The average income in a room with one billionaire is a lie with a formula. This page computes the mean honestly and then, on its own card, explains exactly when to stop trusting it.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

The list field parses on commas, semicolons and whitespace; every token must be a finite number. Mean = sum ÷ count with the mean-times-count identity printed as a check; the spread card reports min and max and flags a max more than ten times the mean as classic outlier shape. Empty lists, non-numeric tokens and lists past 50 values refused; one value is allowed and its loneliness stated.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Average Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs

8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

How do I find the average of a set of numbers?

Add them, divide by how many: 12 + 15 + 18 + 22 + 28 = 95, and 95 ÷ 5 = 19. That is the arithmetic mean — every value contributing equally.

When is the average misleading?

When one value sits far from the crowd. 3, 7, 9, 15 and 100 average 26.8 — above four of the five values — while the middle value is 9. Skewed data wants the median, not the mean.

What is the difference between average and median?

The mean divides the SUM; the median is the middle of the SORTED values. Change the 100 to a 1,000 and the mean explodes while the median does not move — that robustness is why incomes are reported as medians.

How can I tell if my data is skewed?

Compute both: when the mean divided by the middle value leaves the 0.8–1.2 band, the distribution leans and the mean is being dragged — right if the mean is bigger, left if smaller.

Can I average percentages from different groups?

Not by adding and dividing — the average of group percentages equals the overall percentage only when the groups are the same size. Weight by the group sizes first.

Does one value change the average much?

In proportion to its distance from the mean. That is the definition — and the weakness. The mean cannot ignore an outlier; the median cannot see one.

What is a weighted average?

A mean where values count unequally: multiply each value by its weight, divide by the total weight — a 3-credit A outweighs a 1-credit C. It is a different law from this page’s flat mean, where every value pulls equally.

Average page or Median page?

This page owns the mean and its honest failure modes. The Median Calculator — built alongside it in this category — owns the sorted middle, and the Range page carries the quartile story (IQR) as a width question.
