In short: A 75 kg person walking briskly at 3.7 mph for 45 minutes burns about 270 kcal gross, but only 214 kcal net. The 56 kcal difference is the resting metabolism you would have spent anyway — 20.8 per cent of the headline figure, and the number almost every calculator quietly omits.
Formula
gross kcal = MET × kg × hours
net kcal = (MET − 1) × kg × hours
grade factor = (0.1v + 1.8v·g + 3.5) ÷ (0.1v + 3.5)
v is speed in metres per minute and g is fractional grade, following the ACSM walking equation. The grade factor is applied as a ratio to the 2024 Compendium band value, so the level-ground anchor remains the published MET rather than a recomputed one.
Worked Example
- Select the MET value for the entered speed from the 2024 Adult Compendium bands.
- Compute the ACSM oxygen cost at level and at the entered grade, and take the ratio.
- Multiply the Compendium MET by that ratio.
- Gross calories are MET × kg × hours.
- Net calories subtract one MET, which is the resting metabolism over the same period.
75 kg, 45 minutes at 3.7 mph → 4.8 MET → gross 4.8 × 75 × 0.75 = 270 kcal, net (4.8 − 1) × 75 × 0.75 = 214 kcal. The 56 kcal gap is 20.8 per cent of the headline.

Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value. MET values are taken from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities (Herrmann et al.) rather than the superseded 2011 edition. Both GROSS and NET expenditure are reported, because reporting gross alone systematically overstates the energy attributable to the activity by roughly a fifth. The grade adjustment applies the ACSM walking equation as a ratio so the published Compendium band remains the level-ground anchor.
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

What is the difference between gross and net calories?
Gross is the total energy your body used during the activity; net subtracts the resting metabolism you would have spent anyway. Why do fitness trackers report higher calorie numbers?
Chiefly because they report gross expenditure, which includes resting metabolism. Some also apply generous activity classifications. If your tracker says 270 kcal for a brisk 45-minute walk, roughly 56 of those would have been burned sitting still.
How many calories does walking a kilometre burn?
Roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of bodyweight per kilometre, gross — so about 60 kcal per kilometre for a 75 kg walker at brisk pace. That familiar rule of thumb is really the MET arithmetic restated, which is why the two agree so closely.
Does walking uphill burn significantly more?
Yes, and it is the most efficient way to raise intensity without walking faster. At 3.7 mph a 5 per cent incline raises oxygen cost by roughly half, and a 10 per cent incline roughly doubles it, with far less joint loading than running.
Is 1 MET really my resting metabolic rate?
Almost certainly not. The 3.5 ml/kg/min standard came from a single 70 kg, 40-year-old man in the 1950s. Byrne and colleagues measured 642 people in 2005 and found the true average closer to 2.6 ml/kg/min, meaning the convention overestimates resting metabolism by around 35 per cent on the oxygen route.
Why does bodyweight matter so much?
Because you are transporting your own mass, so energy cost scales almost linearly with it. A person 20 kg heavier burns proportionally more on the identical walk. It also explains why the same daily walk burns fewer calories as you lose weight — the workload genuinely decreases.
Does walking speed change calories per kilometre?
Less than most people expect. Walking faster burns more per minute but covers the distance in less time, so the cost per kilometre changes only modestly across normal walking speeds. It rises sharply near the walk-to-run transition, where walking becomes mechanically inefficient.
Is walking as good as running for weight loss?
Per minute, no; per kilometre, the gap is much smaller than people assume. Walking is also far more sustainable for most people and carries a fraction of the injury risk, so the activity you will actually do consistently usually wins over the one that is theoretically more efficient.
What speed counts as brisk walking?
3.5 to 3.9 mph, which is 4.8 MET on the 2024 Adult Compendium. That comfortably clears the 3.0 MET threshold for moderate intensity, so it counts toward the recommended 150 weekly minutes of moderate activity.

If you do, use the net figure, and be aware that calorie expenditure estimates are far less precise than food labels. Many people who plateau despite consistent exercise are eating back a gross figure that overstates what the activity actually cost.
Does carrying weight increase the burn?

Why did the 2024 Compendium change the MET values?
It was the third update, incorporating newer measured data. Several long-standing figures moved — walking at 3.5 mph went from 4.3 to 4.8 MET, and running at 6 mph from 9.8 to 9.3 — so older calculators still using the 2011 values will disagree slightly with this one.
Does walking after a meal burn more?
Total energy cost is essentially unchanged, but walking after eating does meaningfully blunt the post-meal blood glucose rise, which is a worthwhile metabolic benefit in its own right. It is a glycaemic effect rather than a calorie-burning one.
How many steps is a 45-minute walk?

Is treadmill walking the same as outdoor walking?
