What this result does not account for

  • Prices one basket against one month — price feast months separately
  • Groceries 50 to 5,000; meals whole 1 to 999; takeout 1 to 200

In short: A $600.00 basket across 90 home meals cooks at $6.67 a plate; the same 90 meals ordered at $20.00 each would run $1,800.00 — the kitchen keeps $1,200.00 this month. That gap, multiplied by honesty about how often you actually order out, is the whole food-budget argument in one line.

Formula

per meal = groceries ÷ meals; ordered out = meals × takeout price; kept = ordered − groceries

Food money is priced per plate or it is priced by vibe. The honest home number is the month's basket divided by the meals it actually cooks — not the recipe's per-serving fantasy, the whole basket including the snacks. Against it stands your usual ordered meal at full price, tip in. The difference times a month of meals is what the kitchen is worth; price it before deciding it is obvious.

Worked Example

  1. Enter the month's groceries and the meals they cook.
  2. Enter your usual ordered-out meal at full price.
  3. Read the plate, the takeout line, and the gap.

Defaults: $600.00 across 90 meals against a $20.00 order — $6.67 a plate at home, $1,800.00 ordered, $1,200.00 kept.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • The WHOLE basket in the plate price
  • Takeout priced at door cost, not menu cost
  • The monthly gap in dollars, not adjectives

Where it stops

  • One basket per run — split households price two

Risk & accuracy notice. Plate prices swing with season and store; the page prices the basket you enter and says so.

Practical Use Cases

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Meal Cost Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs

8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

What does a home-cooked meal actually cost?

Whatever your basket says: groceries for the month divided by the meals they cook. The default math — $600.00 across 90 meals — lands at $6.67 a plate. That is the honest number because it prices the whole basket, snacks and waste included, not just the recipe's ingredients.

Does the per-plate number include waste?

Yes — that is the point. The basket you bought is the basket you priced: if a third of the produce wilts, the surviving meals carry it. Cutting waste shows up here instantly as a cheaper plate, which is why this card is worth recomputing after a month of better habits.

How should I price takeout honestly?

At what leaves your pocket: the order, the delivery fee, the service fee, and the tip. A $14 menu item routinely costs $20-plus by the time it reaches the door — price that full number, not the menu price, or the comparison flatters takeout.

What if my takeout is cheaper than cooking?

Then the card says so — some staples lose to a cheap order, and the honest page never hides it. Check the delivery pricing first though: fees and tips move the number more than people expect, and the gap usually reappears.

Do drinks and snacks count as meals?

They count as basket — which is the honest denominator. If you want a meals-only plate price, subtract the clearly-not-meals spending from the grocery number first and enter what remains; the page prices whatever basket you give it.

How many meals does a month really hold?

Three a day is about 90 a month per person. Households that eat out some nights cook fewer — enter the number your basket actually covers, and the per-plate price stays honest.

Is cooking for one really more expensive?

Per plate, mildly — baskets do not shrink as fast as appetites. The fix is batch cooking: the same $6.67 plate math with fewer half-used ingredients. The page prices either way; enter the basket and meals you actually have.

Where does the grocery money actually go?

Split your last receipt into meals, drinks, and snacks sometime — the plate price is usually fine and the extras are the story. This page gives you the blended truth; the split is one receipt away.
