What this result does not account for

In short: Inflation is compounded as Future Cost = Present Cost × (1 + rate)^years, while purchasing power moves inversely: Real Value = Nominal ÷ (1 + rate)^years. A constant inflation rate therefore erodes money exponentially, not linearly.

Worked Example
- Build the inflation factor. (1.032)20 = 1.877561.
- Find the future cost. $50,000 × 1.877561 = $93,878.03.
- Invert for purchasing power. $50,000 ÷ 1.877561 = $26,630.30.
- Measure the erosion. Today's $50,000 will buy what $26,630.30 buys now — a loss of $23,369.70.
- Find the halving time. ln(2) ÷ ln(1.032) = 22.0 years for money to lose half its value.
Analyst's note. Only 53.3% of purchasing power survives twenty years at 3.2%. This is the single strongest argument against holding long-term savings in cash: a nominally 'safe' balance loses nearly half its real value over two decades.

It uses a single user-specified rate rather than historical CPI series, so results are a modelling projection rather than an official index measurement. Actual inflation varies by year and by spending category, and personal inflation rates frequently diverge from headline CPI. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

What is a normal inflation rate?

Is deflation better than inflation?
