The joule unifies mechanical, thermal and electrical energy: one watt sustained for one second delivers exactly one joule, which is why power and time convert so directly.
Worked Example
- Convert the source. 1 kWh = 1,000 W × 3,600 s = exactly 3,600,000 J.
- Identify the target. One megajoule is 1,000,000 J.
- Divide. 3,600,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 3.6 MJ.
- Express as food energy. 3,600,000 ÷ 4,184 = 860.42 kcal.
- Sense-check the scale. One kWh would run a 100 W bulb for 10 hours.
Physics note. The dietary Calorie with a capital C is a kilocalorie — one thousand of the calories used in chemistry. A 2,000 Calorie daily intake is 2,000 kcal or about 8.4 megajoules, which is why nutrition labels outside the US often lead with kilojoules.

The kilowatt hour is exactly 3,600,000 J, the thermochemical calorie exactly 4.184 J, and the food Calorie exactly 4,184 J. The electronvolt is exactly 1.602176634 × 10⁻¹⁹ J following the 2019 SI redefinition, which fixed the elementary charge as an exact constant. The British thermal unit uses the International Table value of 1055.05585262 J; several other BTU definitions exist and differ by up to 0.2%, so the variant should be confirmed for precision work. The tonne of TNT is a convention of exactly 4.184 gigajoules. All conversion factors are exact by definition under the International System of Units, or exact by international agreement where the unit is defined by treaty. Values are held at full IEEE-754 double precision internally and rounded only for display, so chained conversions do not accumulate drift.

Is energy the same as power?
No. Energy is a quantity; power is the rate of delivering it. A 100 W device uses 100 joules every second, so multiplying power by time gives energy. Confusing the two is the most common error in energy calculations.
What is a therm?
One hundred thousand BTU, about 105.5 megajoules, used in gas billing. It is convenient because it corresponds closely to the energy in roughly 100 cubic feet of natural gas.
Why is TNT used as an energy unit?
As a convention for large releases. One tonne of TNT is defined as exactly 4.184 gigajoules, chosen because it approximates real explosive yield while remaining a round number in calories.
How many calories does exercise burn in joules?
A 500 kcal session is about 2.09 megajoules. Because human metabolic efficiency is only around 25%, most of that energy leaves the body as heat rather than mechanical work.
Are kJ and kcal interchangeable on labels?
They measure the same thing in different units and most jurisdictions require both. Multiply kilocalories by 4.184 to obtain kilojoules; a 250 kcal snack is 1,046 kJ.
