Worked Example
- Convert the goal time to seconds and divide by 5 km for target pace.
- Multiply by 0.4 for the 400 m track split.
- Accumulate each kilometre checkpoint at target pace.
- Subtract the modelled fast opening kilometre from the goal.
- Divide the remainder by 4 km to obtain the pace the rest of the race now requires.
A 25:00 goal → 5:00 per kilometre and 2:00 per lap. Run kilometre one in 4:50 and the remaining 4 km must average 5:03 — a 10-second gain converted into a 10-second debt, with no distance left to repay it.

Can I predict my marathon time from a 5K?
You can calculate one, but you should not trust it. It is an eight-fold extrapolation, and the marathon depends on glycogen storage, fuelling and durability that a 5 km does not test at all. A half marathon result is a far better basis for a marathon projection.
Why is my parkrun time slower than my track 5K?
