What this result does not account for
- Two sittings; a third folds in by replacing the weaker
- Current 400–1600 scale only
In short: Two sittings — 630 R&W with 710 Math, then 690 R&W with 660 Math — superscore to 1400: the 690 Reading and Writing from June beside the 710 Math from March. The best single morning was 1350, so the mixing is worth exactly 50 points. Sections run 200–800 in ten-point steps and the total 400–1600; superscoring changes nothing about the scale, only which sections a college chooses to see together.
Formula
superscore = max(R&W) + max(Math) ··· each section 200–800, total 400–1600
A superscore rebuilds your strongest possible total from the section scores of different test dates: the best Reading and Writing beside the best Math, wherever each happened. It changes which sections travel together, not their scale. Not every college plays — some insist on the best complete sitting — so both numbers print here and the application's instructions choose.
Worked Example
- Enter each sitting's R&W and Math scores.
- Read the superscore and the best single total.
- Check the gain card before scheduling a third sitting.
- Send what the college's policy actually asks for.
Defaults: 630/710 then 690/660 → superscore 1400 (690 + 710), best single 1350, gain 50. When one sitting holds both bests, the superscore and the single total agree — the gain card prints 0 and the retake question changes shape.

Methodology & Editorial Standards
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.
This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

What exactly is a superscore?
The sum of your best section scores across the dates a college receives: best Reading and Writing plus best Math, each still on its 200–800 scale. It exists because sections wobble independently — a great math morning and a flatt reading one rarely coincide. The superscore lets the strongest halves meet, which is why the page prints it beside the best complete sitting rather than instead of it.
Do all colleges accept superscores?
No — policies split three ways: superscore accepted, best single sitting required, or all sittings mandated. The same student can legitimately report 1400 to one office and 1350 to another, and neither number is inflated: each is the college's own chosen summary of the same two mornings. The application's instructions, not this page, pick the winner.
Why do section scores move in tens?
The 200–800 section scale reports in ten-point increments by design — finer distinctions would imply precision the equating cannot support. It also means a 690 is genuinely a reported score, not a rounding: the scale's grain IS ten. Totals inherit the tens and run 400–1600.
Is the digital SAT scored differently?
The current digital SAT keeps the two-section 200–800 structure and the 400–1600 total; the test became shorter and section-adaptive, but the reporting scale and the superscore arithmetic here are unchanged. Older paper-era scores carry the same sections and can be superscored against newer ones where colleges allow it — check each policy's fine print.
Should I retake to lift the superscore?
The gain card is the honest advisor: it shows exactly what mixing already bought. A small gain means your mornings agree and a retake mostly risks nothing; a large one means one section is dragging and a targeted retake has room. But policies constrain the game — if your colleges require single sittings, the superscore is a private comfort, not a strategy.
What happened to the old 2400 scale?
Retired years ago: the old three-section 2400 scale became the current two-section 1600 one, with Reading and Writing merged into a single section. This page's arithmetic is entirely in the current 400–1600 world; legacy scores convert only through College Board's own concordance tables, not by arithmetic any calculator should guess at.
Can I superscore three or four sittings?
The arithmetic extends naturally — take the best R&W across every sitting and the best Math likewise — but this page models the common two-sitting decision, which is where the strategy actually lives. For a third attempt, replace the weaker sitting's columns: the superscore can only rise or hold, and the gain card will tell you whether the third morning earned its registration fee.
Can I superscore across SAT and ACT?
No — they are different instruments with different scales, and no college mixes sections across them. Concordance tables translate one total into the other's range for schools that accept either, but translation is not superscoring. Each exam's sections combine only with their own kind; this page's ledger never lets a 710 Math shake hands with a 30 Science.
