What this result does not account for

  • Four course rows; fold extras into one
  • Common +0.5 / +1.0 bonus table — districts vary

In short: Four courses — an A in AP, a B+ in honors, an A− and a B in regular sections across 3.5 credits — weigh in at 3.900000 on the weighted 5.0 scale and 3.471429 unweighted. The bonuses did real work: 0.428571 of GPA came from choosing the harder rooms. High school is the one place where the transcript rewards difficulty directly, and the page prices both readings so neither the rigor premium nor the plain average hides.

Formula

weighted GPA = Σ((grade + level bonus) × credits) ÷ Σcredits ··· bonuses: honors +0.5, AP/IB +1.0

The weighted scale pays for difficulty: an A in an AP course banks 5.0 where a regular A banks 4.0, and honors splits the difference at +0.5. The unweighted reading strips every bonus back to the plain 4.0 letter values — which is the scale most colleges recompute. Both numbers are true; they answer different questions, and this page refuses to choose between them.

Worked Example

  1. Enter each course's letter value on the 4.0 scale.
  2. Set the course level: regular, honors or AP/IB.
  3. Enter the semester credits.
  4. Read the weighted and unweighted GPAs side by side.

Defaults: A in AP (1.0 cr), B+ in honors (1.0), A− regular (0.5), B regular (1.0) → weighted 3.900000, unweighted 3.471429. The rigor premium is 0.428571 — more than some letter steps.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Weighted and unweighted printed together
  • Rigor premium priced, not sloganized

Where it stops

  • Fixed bonus table
  • No class-rank percentile

Risk & accuracy notice. Transcript arithmetic on the common bonus table. District weighting policies, caps and rank rules outrank any calculator — the handbook is law.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

High School GPA Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs

8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

Why do weighted and unweighted both exist?

Because they certify different things. The weighted GPA says how hard the schedule was — it ranks a B in AP against an A in a regular room honestly. The unweighted GPA says how the letters read naked, stripped of bonuses, which is what many admissions offices recompute on their own scale. Neither is a flattering version of the other; they are two true sentences about one transcript.

How big is the AP bonus?

One full grade point per course per credit on the common scale: a B in AP banks 4.0, the same as an A in a regular class. Honors carries half of that. The premium compounds through credits — a full-year AP course at 1.0 credit adds a whole point-times-credit to the quality-point bank, which is why the bonus card prints its exact share of your GPA rather than a slogan.

Why do semester credits run in halves?

Semester-length courses earn half the credits of year-long ones on many high school transcripts, and gym-style or elective blocks can carry 0.5 too. The credit is still the weight — a 0.5-credit course moves the GPA half as far as a 1.0-credit one. Enter the credits your transcript prints; the arithmetic treats halves as first-class numbers.

Which GPA do colleges use?

Most recompute on their own scale rather than trusting either number — many strip to unweighted core academics, some re-weight rigor by their own table. That is why both readings print together: the weighted number serves in-school rank and honors cords, the unweighted one survives the recomputation. The application instructions name which the school wants reported.

Does the AP EXAM score enter this GPA?

No — twice over. The exam's 1–5 result lives with College Board, not the transcript, and the course grade itself is what banks grade points here (with the level bonus). A 5 on the exam with a C in the course is 2.0 grade points and a +1.0 bonus — the transcript prices the room, not the May morning.

What if my school caps weighted GPA at 5.0?

The arithmetic here caps each course at grade + bonus ≤ 5.0 automatically, because the letter scale tops at 4.0 and the biggest bonus is +1.0. Some districts cap differently — 4.5 weighted, or bonuses only for juniors and seniors — and those policies are district law; enter the per-course values your handbook's table produces and the mean stays honest.

Can this page mix semesters?

One sitting at a time keeps the question clean: this is the current schedule's weighted standing. A cumulative high school GPA is the same credit-weighted merge the cumulative page runs for college — fold semester GPAs times credits into one bank and divide by every credit attempted. Never average the semester GPAs themselves; credits decide.

Why does the bonus card matter for course selection?

Because it converts advice into arithmetic. Taking the harder room does not just look better — it moves a specific decimal by a specific amount, proportional to the course's credits and your grade in it. Seeing that rigor bought 0.428571 of this GPA tells you what the NEXT honors or AP seat is worth before registration night, which is the only moment the decision is still open.
