What this result does not account for

  • Prices the LOCAL labor line — long-distance linehaul is quoted by weight and distance
  • Crew 1 to 10; hours 0.5 to 24; rate 10 to 500; weight 100 to 50,000

In short: 3 movers for 6 hours at $80.00 each — the industry's usual mover-hour — moves you for $1,440.00: the clock bills $240.00 an hour of moving, and your 5,000 pounds of house travel for 28.8¢ a pound. Any quote that arrives without those three numbers behind it is a guess.

Formula

labor = movers × hours × rate; clock = labor ÷ hours; pound = labor ÷ weight

Local moves are priced by labor: movers times hours times the per-mover rate, with the usual rate near $80 a mover-hour. A quote is checkable three ways — the labor line itself, the clock rate it implies for the whole job, and the pennies a pound your household moves for. The weight is the honest denominater: a 2-bedroom apartment runs about 5,000 pounds, a 3-bedroom house 8,000 to 10,000, and quotes that can't be reduced to dollars a pound are quotes you can't compare.

Worked Example

  1. Enter the crew, the hours on the job, and the per-mover rate.
  2. Enter the household weight — about 5,000 pounds for a 2-bedroom.
  3. Read the labor line, the clock, the pound, and the benchmark.

Defaults: 3 movers, 6 hours, $80.00 a mover-hour, 5,000 pounds — $1,440.00 of labor, the clock at $240.00 an hour, 28.8¢ a pound, right at the usual rate.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • The quote reduced to clock and pound
  • The $80 mover-hour benchmark named, not assumed
  • The labor line separated from truck and fees

Where it stops

  • One crew shape per run — compare bids two at a time

Risk & accuracy notice. Local tariffs vary by market, stair carry and season; the page prices the rate you enter and says so.

Practical Use Cases

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Moving Cost Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs

8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

What does a local move usually cost?

Local crews bill by the hour, and the usual rate sits near $80 a mover-hour — about $160 for a team of two. A 2-bedroom takes roughly 3 movers for 6 hours, which is the $1,440.00 this page computes by default; industry averages for local moves land near $1,700 once the truck and fees ride along.

Why price the move per pound?

Because weight is what every honest quote scales with — long-distance carriers price weight and distance directly, and even local quotes track home size, which is weight in disguise. Reducing the labor line to pennies a pound (28.8¢ here) makes two bids for two different-sized homes comparable.

How much does a long-distance move cost?

Long-distance carriers price weight × distance, and the averages read $2,000 to $8,000 depending on both — around $5,000 for a move over 1,000 miles. The labor arithmetic on this page still applies to the loading and unloading ends; the linehaul is quoted separately.

How many movers do I need?

The rule of thumb is one mover per bedroom, with two as the floor: a 1-bedroom takes 2 movers about 4 hours, a 2-bedroom takes 3 about 6, a 3-bedroom takes 4 about 7. A bigger crew costs more per hour but finishes faster — the clock card shows whether it actually saves.

What is a mover-hour?

One mover working one hour. A 3-person crew running 6 hours bills 18 mover-hours; at $80.00 each that is the $1,440.00 labor line. Quotes stated as a team rate convert by dividing by the crew size — $240 an hour for three movers is $80 a mover-hour.

Does this include the truck and fuel?

No — this page prices the labor line, which is the part quotes pad most. The truck, fuel, and mileage fees ride on top; packing help adds roughly $350 to $600 more. Ask any bidder to break those lines out, then price each the way this page does.

What drives the hours up?

Stairs, long carries between door and truck, elevators with booking windows, and specialty items — pianos and safes move the clock most. Two quotes at the same rate can differ by hours alone, which is why the clock card is the number to compare.

When is DIY cheaper?

Small homes and short distances: a truck rental plus fuel for a studio across town is the labor line's pocket change. Above about a 2-bedroom, or past a few hours of driving, the labor you save gets bought back in time and risk — price both the way this page prices the crew.
