Week Calculator
Where a date sits in its year's weeks — the ISO week number by the Thursday rule, with the year's shape spelled out.

What this result does not account for
- ISO Monday-start weeks only — no local variants
- Week-year naming follows the Thursday rule
In short: Friday 18 September 2026 sits in week 38 of a year that runs 53 weeks — one of the rare ones, because the year opened on a Thursday and the calendar owes December a week 53. ISO weeks start on Monday, and a week belongs to the year that holds its Thursday: that single rule is why early January can report the previous year's week and why most years carry 52 while a handful carry 53. Week numbers are how factories, fleets and broadcasters actually schedule — and getting the edge cases wrong is how their software does too.
Formula
week = floor((day-of-year − ISO weekday + 10) ÷ 7)
The ISO rule in one line: weeks start on Monday, and week 1 of a year is the one containing that year's first Thursday — equivalently, the week holding the fourth of January. The formula counts the day of year, shifts it so Mondays lead, and divides; the edges fall out of the rule rather than being patched. A January date whose Thursday lives in the old year reports the old year's last week; a December date whose Thursday lives in the new year reports week 1 to come.
Worked Example
- Pick the date.
- Read its week number and week-year.
- Check the year's shape before scheduling week 53.
Defaults: 18 September 2026 — week 38, Friday, in a 53-week year. Try the year's edges: the first of January here can belong to the previous year's final week, and the thirty-first of December can already be week 1.
Strengths & Limits Of This Model
Where this engine is strong
- The year's 52-or-53 shape is computed, not assumed
- Edge dates taught on the page, not discovered in prod
Where it stops
- No Sunday-start or fiscal week variants
Practical Use Cases
Manufacturing
week numbers on every carton
Broadcast planning
the schedule grid's currency
Reports and sprints
the week axis done right
Methodology & Editorial Standards
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.
This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Week Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs
8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.
Why does week 1 sometimes sit in the old year?
Because weeks belong to their Thursday. A year opening on a Friday keeps its first days in the previous year's final week — their Thursday has not happened yet in the new year. The date is in January; the week is not.
What is the Thursday rule?
Week 1 of a year is the only week that contains that year's first Thursday — equivalently, the week containing the fourth of January. One rule, no exceptions, and every edge case falls out of it rather than being patched.
Which years run 53 weeks?
Years that open on a Thursday, and leap years that open on a Wednesday — about once every five or six years. The default date here lives in one of them, which is why the year's-shape card gets to be interesting.
Why do my spreadsheet and this page disagree in January?
Most spreadsheet defaults count a week 1 from the first of January regardless of weekday — a local convention, not the ISO rule. Both are calculable; only one matches the week numbers stamped on export crates and broadcast schedules.
Do weeks start on Sunday anywhere?
As a local convention, yes — North American wall calendars often lead with Sunday. The ISO week starts Monday by definition, and week numbers computed on a Sunday start will not match. Pick one system per project and label it.
What is a week-year?
The year that owns the date's week, which in early January and late December can differ from the calendar year. Logistics software writes dates as week-year plus week plus weekday precisely to dodge that boundary.
Why plan in weeks at all?
Because months lie about length and weeks never do — every week is seven days, and production lines, freight rotations and programme grids all run on that metronome. The week number is the address of a week, unambiguous once the rule is fixed.
How often is week 53 a trap?
Whenever software assumes 52. Subscription billing, weekly backups and reporting axes that hard-code the assumption drop or duplicate a week in 53-week years — check the year's shape here before promising week-53 deliverables.
