It is an approximation. Height times 0.413 is the standard walking estimate, but stride varies with leg length, speed, footwear and terrain. For a precise figure, walk 20 measured steps, divide the distance by 20, and compare against the value shown here.

Do steps count if they are just around the house?

They count toward volume and are genuinely better than sitting, but at household cadence they usually fall below 3 MET, so they do not count toward the weekly moderate-activity target. The engine classifies your derived intensity so you can see which side of that line you are on.
