What this result does not account for
- Height-based estimates ignore leg-to-torso proportion, which varies considerably between individuals of the same height.
- Step length measured at one effort does not transfer to another; it grows substantially with pace.
- Terrain matters. Hills, trails and soft surfaces all shorten the step.
- Derived step length is only as good as the cadence reading, and devices differ on steps versus strides.
- Fatigue shortens step length within a single run, so a single measurement is a snapshot.
In short: A step is one foot strike; a stride is a full cycle of two steps. Half the sources online mean one and half mean the other, so the same runner is quoted at both 1.2 m and 2.4 m. This tool always reports both, labelled. The exact route is measurement: count your steps over a known distance. Failing that, step length = speed ÷ cadence, or estimate it from height — a running step is roughly 0.50× height easy rising to 0.68× at race pace, which is 20 to 65 per cent longer than the 0.413× walking figure.

For a 175 cm runner that is 0.67 of height — long for steady effort, where the reference multiplier is 0.55, but plausible at speed. That step length works out at 850 steps per kilometre, roughly 35,866 foot strikes over a marathon. The walking estimate for the same runner is 72.3 cm, so the running step is about 63 per cent longer — which is the same thing as saying the walking step is 39 per cent shorter, a distinction worth getting right.

Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

What is the difference between step length and stride length
A step is one foot strike, measured from one foot landing to the other foot landing. A stride is a full gait cycle of two steps, from one foot landing to that same foot landing again. Stride length is therefore exactly double step length. Many websites and some devices use the words interchangeably, which is why the same runner gets quoted 1.2 m by one source and 2.4 m by another. How do I measure my stride length
Mark out a known distance, ideally 100 m on a track, run it at the effort you care about and count every foot strike. Distance divided by steps is your step length; double it for the stride. Counting one foot and doubling the count is easier than counting both. Measuring at easy pace tells you very little about your step length at race pace, so measure at the effort you actually want to know about.

There is no single average, because step length scales with height and with speed. The result is that the running step is typically 20 to 65 per cent longer at the same height, and grows further as pace increases.
Can I calculate stride length from speed and cadence
Yes, and it is exact. Speed equals cadence multiplied by step length, so step length equals speed divided by cadence. At 12 km/h, which is 200 m per minute, and 170 steps per minute, the step is 1.18 m. The one thing to verify is whether your watch reports steps per minute or strides per minute, because using strides where the formula expects steps halves the answer.
How many steps are in a kilometre
It depends entirely on your step length. Divide 1,000 by your step length in metres. A 1.18 m running step gives about 847 steps per kilometre; a 0.72 m walking step gives about 1,389. That range is why generic conversions of steps to distance are unreliable, and why pedometer distances drift if the device has the wrong step length stored.
Should I try to lengthen my stride
Usually not by reaching further forward, which is overstriding and puts the foot down ahead of your centre of mass where it brakes on every landing. Step length grows naturally as fitness and strength improve and as you push harder off the ground behind you, not by extending the leg out in front. If your cadence is well below the range for your height, the more useful change is usually to raise cadence, which shortens the step.
Does stride length change with fatigue
Yes. As you tire, step length typically shortens while cadence stays relatively stable, so speed falls. This is one reason to measure at a consistent point in a run rather than comparing a fresh kilometre with the last one of a long session. Watching step length decay across a long run is a useful marker of pacing and endurance.
Does my watch measure step length or stride length
It varies by manufacturer, and the label on the screen is not always reliable. A quick test: run at a known steady speed, note the reported figure, and multiply it by the reported cadence. If the product matches your actual speed, the device is reporting step length against steps per minute. If it comes out at double your speed, the figure is a stride and covers two footfalls.
