Formula
Also called the acid test. It excludes inventory entirely on the assumption that stock cannot be converted to cash quickly enough, or at full value, to meet an obligation falling due now.
Worked Example
- Count only what is already cash or nearly cash. $180,000 of cash plus $340,000 of receivables is $520,000. Marketable securities would count too; inventory and prepaid items do not.
- Divide by the same liabilities. $520,000 ÷ $740,000 is 0.703 — below the 0.8 threshold most lenders apply, with $72,000 of quick assets missing.
- Compare against the current ratio. The current ratio reads 1.351 on the identical balance sheet. The 0.649 gap is $420,000 of inventory and $60,000 of prepaid items.
- Stress the receivables. If 15% proves uncollectible, $51,000 disappears and the ratio falls to 0.634. Receivables are only as good as the customers behind them.
- Run the cash-only test. On cash alone the ratio is 0.243. That is the genuinely worst case, in which no invoice is collected and no unit of stock is sold.
This balance sheet is the reason both covenants exist. It passes the current ratio test at 1.351 and fails the quick ratio test at 0.703, and both statements are true of the same company on the same day. A lender reading only the current ratio would conclude the business is comfortably liquid; a lender reading only the quick ratio would conclude it cannot meet its obligations. The truth is that liquidity here depends entirely on selling $420,000 of inventory and then collecting on it, which is fine in a normal market and precarious in a downturn — exactly when inventory becomes hardest to move.

The quick ratio, also called the acid test, divides assets convertible to cash almost immediately by current liabilities. Cash, marketable securities and accounts receivable qualify; inventory and prepaid expenses are excluded on the grounds that inventory requires both a sale and a subsequent collection before it produces cash, and prepaid expenses never produce cash at all. Lenders typically require a quick ratio above 0.8, against 1.2 for the current ratio, and the engine reports both so the divergence is explicit — a balance sheet can comfortably pass one covenant while breaching the other, which is the entire reason both are written into loan agreements. Because receivables carry collection risk that the raw ratio ignores, the engine stresses them by a user-specified percentage, and it also reports the cash ratio, which counts only cash and securities and represents the genuine worst case. A fire-sale scenario at 60% of carrying value is shown for context, although forced liquidations frequently realise substantially less. Sector matters greatly: retailers and restaurants operate at very low quick ratios by design because they collect at the point of sale, whereas project-based businesses with lumpy receipts need considerably more cushion than the headline threshold suggests.
