In short: Annual Percentage Yield is calculated as APY = (1 + r/n)^n − 1, where r is the nominal annual rate and n the number of compounding periods per year. APY captures the effect of compounding, which is why two accounts with the same nominal rate can pay different amounts.

Formula

APY = (1 + rn)n − 1

r = nominal annual rate (decimal) · n = compounding periods per year

Worked Example

  1. Convert the nominal rate. 5.25% becomes 0.0525.
  2. Divide by frequency. 0.0525 ÷ 12 = 0.004375 per month.
  3. Compound twelve times. (1.004375)12 = 1.053782.
  4. Subtract one. APY = 5.3782%.
  5. Apply to the balance. $25,000 × 5.3782% = $1,344.55 in year one.

Analyst's note. The 0.1282 percentage-point gap between the 5.25% nominal rate and the 5.3782% APY is pure compounding. On $25,000 that is $32.05 a year — small, but it is the reason regulators require deposit products to advertise APY rather than nominal rate.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

This engine applies the effective annual rate identity APY = (1 + r/n)^n − 1, the definition used in US Regulation DD for deposit account disclosure. Balance projections assume the rate is held constant and interest is retained in the account. Real accounts may pay tiered rates or introductory bonuses that this model does not capture. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

What is APY?

Annual Percentage Yield is the rate of return actually earned over a year once compounding is included. It answers the practical question: if I deposit $100 today and leave it untouched, how much more will I have in twelve months?

What is the difference between APY and APR?

APY includes the effect of compounding; APR does not. APY is used for deposits and savings, APR for borrowing. A 5.25% APR compounded monthly equals a 5.3782% APY — the same money described two ways.

Is a higher APY always better?

For a straightforward savings account, yes. But check for conditions: introductory rates that expire, balance caps above which the headline rate does not apply, minimum balance requirements, and withdrawal restrictions all reduce the effective return.

How does compounding frequency change APY?

More frequent compounding raises APY, with diminishing returns. At a 5.25% nominal rate, annual gives 5.25%, quarterly 5.3543%, monthly 5.3782% and daily 5.3899%. The move from annual to monthly matters far more than monthly to daily.

Does APY account for tax?

No. APY is a pre-tax figure. Interest on ordinary savings is generally taxed as income, so your after-tax yield is APY multiplied by one minus your marginal rate.

Is APY guaranteed?

Only on fixed-term products such as CDs. Standard savings accounts pay variable rates the bank can change at any time, so a quoted APY is a snapshot rather than a promise.

What is the difference between APY and APYE?

APYE, Annual Percentage Yield Earned, appears on US account statements and reflects the yield actually achieved on your real balance during that statement period, including any fees and balance changes. APY is the forward-looking advertised rate.

How do I convert APY back to a nominal rate?

Rearrange the formula: r = n × ((1 + APY)^(1/n) − 1). This is useful when you know the advertised yield but need the nominal rate for a model that compounds internally.

Why does my interest not match the APY exactly?

Because balances change. APY assumes a constant balance held for a full year. Deposits, withdrawals, fees and mid-year rate changes will all move your realised return away from the advertised figure.

What is continuous compounding APY?

The theoretical maximum, given by e^r − 1. At 5.25% that is 5.3903% — barely above daily compounding, which is why no bank markets it.

Does APY apply to investments as well as savings?

Not conventionally. Investments with variable returns are normally described using CAGR or annualised total return, because APY implies a contractual compounding schedule that market returns do not have.

How long will it take my savings to double?

Divide the natural log of 2 by the natural log of one plus the APY. At 5.3782% that is 13.23 years. The Rule of 72 approximates it as 72 ÷ 5.3782 ≈ 13.4 years.

An em-dash indicates the calculation is not defined for the inputs given — typically a division by zero or a value outside the valid domain. We show a dash rather than a misleading number.
