Worked Example
- Find the periodic rate. 4.5% ÷ 12 = 0.375% a month.
- Compound to maturity. $25,000 × (1.00375)60 = $31,294.90.
- Convert the rate to a yield. (1.00375)12 − 1 = 4.594% APY, which is the figure to compare across products.
- Price the penalty. Six months of interest on the principal = $25,000 × 0.00375 × 6 = $562.50.
- Test an early exit. At month 24 the balance is $27,349.75; less the penalty, $26,787.25 — against $27,078.57 in a liquid 4.0% account.
Analyst's note. The certificate pays 50 basis points more than the liquid alternative and still loses by $291.32 if broken at two years. That is the whole case for matching the term to the money: a rate premium you cannot hold to maturity is not a premium at all. Note also that the penalty is recovered after just six months, so the risk is concentrated entirely in the first half-year.

The penalty follows the prevailing US convention of N months of simple interest computed on the principal at the nominal rate, which is how most institutions express it; a minority compute it on the amount withdrawn or on interest actually earned, which is more lenient. Where accrued interest is less than the penalty the net figure can fall below the original deposit, and the engine reports that honestly rather than flooring it at zero. Figures are gross of tax. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result.
