The equivalent 5K is obtained by inverting Riegel's curve rather than by halving, which is the point of the page. The physiological classification is made against the runner's own finishing duration relative to the one-hour lactate-threshold marker, so the same distance is correctly described as a different event for a 35-minute and a 60-minute runner.

Because the error is invisible early. Twelve seconds per kilometre feels comfortable for the first few kilometres, so the runner receives no warning until around 7 km, at which point there is no distance left in which to recover and the last 3 km are run far slower than target.
Is the 10K a threshold race or a VO2max race?
It depends who is running it. For a 50-minute runner the race lasts close to an hour, which is essentially lactate threshold pace. For an elite finishing in 28 minutes the same distance sits well above threshold and is limited by oxygen delivery. The distance is identical; the event is not.
Should I take a gel during a 10K?
For most runners, no. At under about 60 to 75 minutes the body has ample glycogen and carbohydrate during the race makes little measurable difference. Fluid depends on heat rather than distance. Your nutrition decisions for a 10K are made in the preceding two days.
