Metrology note. Both the mile per hour and the knot are exact: the mile is exactly 1609.344 m and the nautical mile exactly 1852 m by international agreement. Mach is the exception — it varies with air temperature and altitude, so the sea-level figure here is a reference approximation, not a fixed constant.

The mile per hour follows from the international mile of exactly 1609.344 m, and the knot from the nautical mile of exactly 1852 m, both divided by 3,600 seconds. Kilometres per hour and metres per minute are exact decimal fractions. Mach is the sole approximation: the speed of sound varies with temperature, pressure and humidity, and the 343 m/s figure used here corresponds to dry air at 20 °C at sea level. Pace outputs are the reciprocal of speed and are undefined at zero. All conversion factors are exact by definition under the International System of Units, or exact by international agreement where the unit is defined by treaty. Values are held at full IEEE-754 double precision internally and rounded only for display, so chained conversions do not accumulate drift.
