Time Duration Calculator
Two spans, added and subtracted — duration arithmetic with the total-seconds identity shown plainly.

What this result does not account for
- Whole seconds only — no fractional timing
- Two spans per run; longer lists repeat the sum
In short: Two and a half hours plus three-quarters of an hour is 3 hours 15 minutes — 11,700 seconds either way. Subtract instead and the second span runs 1 hour 45 minutes short. Durations have no clock face, no midnight and no morning: they are pure quantities, which is why the seconds identity matters — the sum, the difference and the parts all speak the same unit, and nothing wraps.
Formula
S = 3600·h + 60·m + s — then add and subtract in seconds
Each span collapses to seconds — hours times 3,600, minutes times sixty — and from there the arithmetic is ordinary addition and subtraction. The display decomposes back to hours, minutes and seconds for reading, but every operation happened in the one unit, which is why a sum and its parts can never disagree by a second. Borrowing is a display trick; the seconds never moved.
Worked Example
- Enter both spans as hours, minutes, seconds.
- Read the sum and the absolute difference.
- Check them against the total-seconds identity.
Defaults: 2 h 30 m plus 45 m — the sum is 3 h 15 m 0 s, the difference 1 h 45 m 0 s, 11,700 seconds on the identity line. Make the second span longer than the first and the difference changes sides, signed and explained.
Strengths & Limits Of This Model
Where this engine is strong
- Sum, difference and identity never disagree
- No clock face — spans past 24 h stay honest
Where it stops
- No decimal-second inputs or averaging
Practical Use Cases
Edit suites
clip lists that must sum to slot
Training plans
interval legs and recoveries
Ops logs
outage windows added honestly
Methodology & Editorial Standards
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.
This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Time Duration Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs
8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.
Why add in seconds instead of column by column?
Because carrying minutes into hours by hand is how arithmetic errors happen. Seconds are the common unit; the columns are just how humans read the answer back. The identity line exists so you can watch the two agree.
What does the difference mean when the second span is longer?
The magnitude is the gap and the wording says which side is longer — durations are not signed in daily speech, so the page says 'the second runs longer by' rather than printing a minus.
Can a span exceed 24 hours?
Yes and it should — durations have no clock face. A 30-hour build is 30 hours; only clock readings wrap. This page never wraps, which is exactly why the hours page and this page are different tools.
How precise is the seconds identity?
Exact — integers throughout. 3,600 and 60 are the only conversion constants, so the parts, the sum and the total cannot disagree by even one second.
Decimal hours or decimal minutes?
The identity line stays in seconds; divide by 60 for minutes or by 3,600 for hours when a form wants decimal. Both divisors are exact for whole seconds up to rounding at the sixth place, which the card shows if you need it.
Borrowing across zero — how does 1 h 0 m minus 1 s display?
As 59 minutes 59 seconds. The decomposition borrows a minute into sixty seconds exactly like column arithmetic, and the identity line proves the subtraction with 3,599 seconds.
Why two spans and not three?
Two answers the question people actually hold — what do these add to, and how far apart are they. Longer lists are addition repeated; the sum of the first two plus the third is the same seconds either way.
Where do fractions of a second go?
Out of scope, on purpose — stopwatches to the tenth belong to timing gear with their own conventions. Every input here is whole seconds and every output is too.
