What this result does not account for

  • Assumes ovulation occurs on the predicted day, which a calendar cannot verify.
  • Sperm survival varies with cervical mucus quality and individual factors.
  • Per-day probabilities are population averages and decline with age.

In short: With ovulation on 22 July 2026, the fertile window runs 17 to 22 July — six days. The peak is the day BEFORE ovulation at roughly 30% per cycle, and the window closes on ovulation day because the egg survives only 12 to 24 hours.

Formula

Window opens = Ovulation − Sperm survival
Window closes = Ovulation day
Length = Sperm survival + 1 day

Asymmetric by biology: sperm last up to five days, the egg twelve to twenty-four hours.

Worked Example

  1. Locate ovulation. 30-day cycle less a 14-day luteal phase puts it on 22 July 2026.
  2. Open the window early. Five days before, 17 July 2026, because sperm survive that long in fertile mucus.
  3. Close it on the day. 22 July 2026. The egg survives 12 to 24 hours, so there is no window after.
  4. Find the peak. The day before ovulation, 21 July 2026, at roughly 30% — higher than ovulation day itself.
  5. Set a frequency. Every one to two days across the six. Daily adds nothing; abstaining harms sperm quality.

The asymmetry of the fertile window is the thing worth internalising. It opens five days before ovulation and shuts on the day itself, because sperm can wait and the egg cannot. That makes the day BEFORE ovulation the most fertile day of the entire cycle — more fertile than ovulation day — since sperm are already in place when the egg arrives. It also means that couples who wait for a positive predictor kit and then try have often already passed the peak, and couples who try the day after ovulation have missed the window completely. Aim early rather than late; there is a five-day margin on one side and none at all on the other.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Derives the window from gamete survival rather than a fixed calendar rule.
  • Identifies the day before ovulation as the peak, which is counter-intuitive but correct.
  • Gives evidence-based guidance on frequency rather than folklore.

Where it stops

  • Cannot confirm ovulation actually occurred.
  • Cannot assess sperm quality, which is half of the equation.

Risk & accuracy notice. This window is not a contraceptive schedule. Its boundaries depend on ovulation occurring exactly as predicted, and ovulation timing moves with stress, illness and travel.

Practical Use Cases

Timing intercourse to maximise the chance

Every one to two days from 17 to 22 July, with the 20th and 21st carrying the highest probability.

Understanding a negative month

Even perfectly timed, a healthy couple conceives in only 20 to 25% of cycles. One month means nothing.

Interpreting predictor kit timing

A positive LH test means ovulation in 24 to 36 hours — you are at the peak now. See the Ovulation Calculator.

Planning around irregular cycles

If cycles vary widely the window moves. Assess regularity with the Menstrual Cycle Calculator.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

The fertile window is the set of days on which intercourse can result in conception, and it is determined by the survival times of the two gametes rather than by the cycle calendar alone. Sperm remain viable for up to five days in the fertile cervical mucus present before ovulation, while the released egg survives only twelve to twenty-four hours, so the window opens roughly five days before ovulation and closes on the day itself. The engine allows the sperm survival assumption to be varied because it is the parameter carrying the most biological variability. Per-day conception probabilities follow the classic prospective studies of the fertile interval, which place the maximum on the day preceding ovulation at roughly thirty percent rather than on ovulation day, since sperm already present in the reproductive tract at the moment of release outperform sperm arriving afterwards. The day following ovulation carries essentially no probability. The engine also addresses intercourse frequency, where the evidence favours every one to two days: longer abstinence increases ejaculate volume but reduces motility and increases DNA fragmentation, so saving up is counterproductive. Cycle-based windows assume ovulation occurs as predicted and cannot confirm it. This calculator is an educational estimate and is not medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Cycle-based predictions assume regular ovulation and cannot account for irregular cycles, hormonal contraception, recent pregnancy or breastfeeding, thyroid or polycystic ovary syndrome, perimenopause, or any medication affecting the cycle. Dates produced here must not be used as contraception, and they do not establish paternity or any legal fact. A first-trimester ultrasound dates a pregnancy far more accurately than any calculation from a remembered period, and it takes precedence. Discuss results with a midwife or doctor. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Fertility Window Calculator — 20 Expert FAQs

20 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

How long is the fertile window?

Six days: the five before ovulation plus ovulation day. Here 17 to 22 July 2026.

Which day is most fertile?

The day before ovulation, at roughly 30%. Higher than ovulation day itself.

Why does the window open five days early?

Sperm survive up to five days in fertile cervical mucus, so they can be waiting when the egg arrives.

Why does it close on ovulation day?

The egg survives only 12 to 24 hours. The day after carries effectively no chance.

Can I conceive the day after ovulation?

Realistically no. By then the egg has degenerated, which is why aiming early beats aiming late.

How often should we try?

Every one to two days across the window. Daily offers no reliable advantage.

Does abstaining improve the odds?

No. Longer abstinence raises volume but lowers motility and raises DNA fragmentation. Two to three days is optimal.

What are the odds in one cycle?

About 20 to 25% for a healthy couple with good timing, which is why 85% conceive within a year.

Does a positive LH test mean I have ovulated?

No, it means ovulation is 24 to 36 hours away. You are at the peak, so act immediately.

Can the window shift?

Yes. Stress, illness and travel delay ovulation and move the whole window with it.

Does position or lying down afterwards help?

There is no good evidence for either. Sperm reach the fallopian tubes within minutes.

How does age affect this?

Per-cycle probability falls steadily from the mid-thirties. Timing helps but cannot offset declining egg quality.

When should we seek help?

After 12 months of trying, or 6 months if the female partner is over 35, or sooner with known risk factors.

Does cervical mucus indicate the window?

Yes, and reliably. Clear, slippery, stretchy mucus means the window is open now.

Do irregular cycles have a fertile window?

Yes, but its timing cannot be predicted from the calendar. Predictor kits or mucus tracking are needed.

Is a longer window better?

The window is set by gamete survival, not by cycle length. It is six days regardless of whether your cycle is 24 or 35 days.

Is this fertility window calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, requires no account, and has no usage limits. ApexConverter is funded by contextual advertising, never by selling user data.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The engine runs as Vanilla JavaScript inside your browser under our Zero-Server Client-Side Execution model. Your figures are computed locally and are never transmitted, logged, or stored.

How accurate is this calculator?

It applies the standard closed-form formula in IEEE-754 double precision, rounding only at the display layer. The engine is reconciled against an independent reference implementation before release.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The interface is mobile-first with numeric keypad hints and is tested down to a 320-pixel viewport with no horizontal scrolling.
