Worked Example

  1. Find the next period. 6 July 2026 + 30 days = 5 August 2026.
  2. Count back the luteal phase. 5 August 2026 − 14 days = 22 July 2026.
  3. Express it as a cycle day. 30 − 14 = day 16, not day 14.
  4. Measure the day-14 error. The old rule would have said 20 July — two days early, and a week out on a 35-day cycle.
  5. Open the window. Fertility runs 17 to 22 July 2026: the five days before ovulation plus the day itself.

Almost every popular account of the cycle says ovulation happens on day 14, and that is true only for a 28-day cycle. The luteal phase — from ovulation to the next period — is the part that holds steady at about 14 days, because it is set by the lifespan of the corpus luteum. Everything before ovulation is what stretches and contracts. So the correct move is to count backwards from the next expected period, which puts this 30-day cycle at day 16 and a 35-day cycle at day 21. Anyone using day 14 on a 35-day cycle is looking for the fertile window a full week before it opens, which is precisely how couples conclude they have a fertility problem when they have an arithmetic problem.

This is the correct construction because the two halves of the cycle behave differently: the luteal phase, from ovulation to menstruation, is governed by the fixed lifespan of the corpus luteum and runs close to 14 days in almost everyone, while the follicular phase preceding ovulation varies substantially between individuals and between cycles in response to stress, illness, travel and sleep. The familiar rule placing ovulation on day 14 is therefore a special case that holds only for a 28-day cycle, and the engine quantifies the error explicitly for any other cycle length. The estimate remains a calendar prediction and cannot detect whether ovulation actually occurred: urine predictor kits identify the luteinising hormone surge roughly 24 to 36 hours beforehand and respond to the cycle actually in progress, while basal body temperature confirms ovulation only after the fact.
