Formula
A single ratio drives the whole estimate, which is why both heart rates need to be reliable before the answer means anything.
Worked Example
- Establish both anchors. Tanaka gives 169.5 bpm maximum at age 55; the measured resting rate is 58 bpm.
- Take the ratio. 169.5 ÷ 58 is 2.9224 — the single number the estimate depends on.
- Apply the coefficient. 15.3 × 2.9224 gives 44.7 ml/kg/min.
- Place it against norms. For a man aged 50 to 59 that is the excellent band, just below the 45 superior threshold.
- Convert to functional capacity. 44.7 ÷ 3.5 is 12.78 METs, against roughly 8 METs for climbing stairs briskly.
This estimate is more fragile than it looks. Everything rests on one ratio, and five beats of variation in resting heart rate — well within the range that sleep, alcohol, caffeine or a stressful week will produce — moves the result by about 3.5 ml/kg/min, which is enough to cross a band boundary. The Cooper distance is the useful sanity check: this estimate predicts roughly 2,505 metres in twelve hard minutes, and that is a falsifiable claim. If you can comfortably run further, or cannot get close, the heart-rate-derived figure is wrong for you and a field test should replace it. Use this to track a direction over months, not to quote a number.

This engine applies the Uth-Sørensen-Overgaard-Pedersen equation, which estimates it as 15.3 times the ratio of maximum to resting heart rate, exploiting the fact that a well-conditioned heart moves more blood per beat and therefore rests more slowly relative to its peak. The method was validated on trained men aged twenty-one to fifty-one, and the engine states plainly when a user falls outside that group, as it performs least well for sedentary people and for anyone taking rate-limiting medication. Because the entire result rests on a single ratio, the engine quantifies its sensitivity: a five beat movement in resting heart rate, which ordinary variation in sleep, caffeine, alcohol and stress will readily produce, shifts the estimate enough to cross a classification boundary, so a multi-day average is essential. Results are placed against age and sex banded population norms, converted into METs for functional interpretation, and converted into an equivalent Cooper twelve-minute run distance, which turns the estimate into a falsifiable prediction that a field test can check directly.
