In short: Training at 65% of heart rate reserve gives a target of 130 bpm at age 55 with a resting rate of 58, or a working band of 125 to 136 bpm. The same 65% by percentage of maximum would put you at 110 bpm — 20 beats easier.

Same intensity percentage, two very different heart rates. Only the reserve version represents that fraction of the work your heart can actually do.

Worked Example

  1. Establish the reserve. 169.5 bpm estimated maximum less a 58 bpm resting rate gives 111.5 bpm of reserve.
  2. Apply the intensity. 58 + (111.5 × 65%) puts the target at 130 bpm.
  3. Set a workable band. 125 to 136 bpm. Five beats either side is realistic; chasing one number causes surging.
  4. Compare the other method. 65% of maximum alone would be 110 bpm — 20 beats easier, and only 46.79% of true reserve.
  5. Check the session makes sense. 45 minutes at 65% of reserve is a sustainable continuous aerobic session.

The same phrase — "train at 65%" — produces 130 bpm one way and 110 bpm the other, and both are defensible readings of the instruction. That ambiguity is why so much published training advice is unreproducible: unless the method is stated, a percentage on its own does not identify an intensity. The reserve version is the one that means what it says, because 65% of reserve genuinely is 65% of the work your heart is capable of, whereas 65% of maximum lands at only 46.79% of your usable range. When a plan, a coach or an article gives you a percentage, the first question worth asking is which denominator they meant.

A target heart rate converts a chosen training intensity into a specific rate to hold during a session. The engine uses the Karvonen method by default, adding a percentage of heart rate reserve to the resting rate, because that construction represents the stated percentage of the work the heart is actually capable of; the alternative, a flat percentage of maximum, is reported alongside it because the two are routinely confused and differ substantially, with the percentage-of-maximum figure always landing lower and corresponding to a considerably smaller fraction of true reserve. A working band of five beats either side of the target is given rather than a single number, since holding an exact rate causes more surging and easing than it prevents, and heart rate lags effort by a minute or two at the start of a session before drifting upward at constant effort as heat and fatigue accumulate. The engine sense-checks the requested duration against the requested intensity, since sustained work above roughly ninety percent of reserve is interval territory measured in minutes rather than something that can be held continuously.
