  1. Count properly. 29 beats over 30 seconds is 58 bpm. Counting a full 60 seconds avoids multiplying your error.
  2. Place it in context. 58 bpm sits in the excellent band below 60, typical of someone doing regular aerobic work.
  3. Find the reserve. An estimated maximum of 169.5 at age 55 less 58 gives 111.5 bpm of usable range.
  4. Compare against a higher rate. At 72 bpm the reserve would be only 97.5 — 14 bpm narrower, or 14.36% less range to train in.
  5. Watch the trend, not the reading. A sustained rise of 5 beats above your own baseline signals fatigue, illness or poor recovery.

Resting heart rate is usually presented as a longevity statistic, and the beats-saved figure here is genuinely striking — over 7.3 million fewer beats a year at 58 than at 72. But the causal claim behind that framing is weaker than it sounds, and the more defensible reason to care is mechanical: a lower resting rate widens your heart rate reserve, and reserve is what every training zone is actually built from. Resting heart rate is the number of beats per minute with the body completely at rest, and it is measured most reliably on waking, before rising, before caffeine, and averaged across several consecutive mornings. The engine converts a counted pulse over any interval into beats per minute and notes that counting for a full sixty seconds is preferable to counting fifteen and multiplying, because the shorter count multiplies any miscount by four. Interpretation is offered against the conventional adult range of sixty to one hundred, which is wide enough to be nearly uninformative on its own, so the engine emphasises the individual trend instead: a sustained rise of five or more beats above a personal baseline is a well-established marker of incomplete recovery, developing illness, dehydration, alcohol or disrupted sleep. The more analytically useful output is heart rate reserve, the span between resting and maximum, because every reserve-based training zone is a percentage of that span rather than of the maximum alone, and two people sharing a maximum but differing in resting rate have materially different amounts of room to work in.
