Worked Example

  1. Start at the alarm. 07:00 is fixed; everything counts backwards from it.
  2. Multiply out the cycles. 6 × 90 minutes = 540 minutes, which is 9 hours of sleep.
  3. Add falling-asleep time. 540 + 15 = 555 minutes in bed.
  4. Count back. 07:00 − 9 h 15 m = 21:45.
  5. Take the practical option. Five cycles gives 23:15 and 7.5 hours — usually the realistic choice.

Treat these times as a way of choosing between two reasonable bedtimes, not as a target to hit precisely. The ninety-minute cycle is an average of a range that runs from roughly seventy to a hundred and twenty minutes, and an individual's cycles change length across a single night, so the arithmetic cannot be as precise as it looks. What it does well is frame the real decision: at 22:45 you are choosing between about six hours and about seven and a half, and the cycle count makes that trade-off visible. Two things matter more than any of this — total sleep, and keeping wake time consistent, including at weekends. Shifting wake time by two hours on a Saturday imposes much the same cost as flying across two time zones.
