In short: A resting metabolism of 1,720 kcal at age 41 corresponds to a metabolic age of about 43.5. The figure is a consumer-marketing construct with no clinical definition, and when derived from an equation that ignores body composition it is close to circular.

The second equation is simply the first rearranged for age — which is exactly why the result is close to circular.

Worked Example

  1. Start from the standard equation. Mifflin-St Jeor: BMR = 10W + 6.25H − 5A + s.
  2. Rearrange it for age. A = (10W + 6.25H + s − BMR) ÷ 5.
  3. Substitute the numbers. (10×82 + 6.25×178 + 5 − 1,720) ÷ 5.
  4. Compute. (820 + 1,112.5 + 5 − 1,720) ÷ 5 = 43.5 years.
  5. Read it honestly. 2.5 years above an actual age of 41 — and the equation never saw a single health variable.

This page computes the number properly and then tells you not to trust it, which is the only defensible way to publish it. Metabolic age is produced by taking a BMR equation and solving it backwards for age. Mifflin-St Jeor contains weight, height, age and sex and nothing else — no muscle, no fitness, no health marker of any kind — so if your BMR figure came from that same equation, the metabolic age it returns is your own inputs rearranged. There is no clinical definition of the metric, no reference range, no validation against any health outcome, and no two manufacturers compute it identically. Where a genuine difference in resting metabolism does exist between two people of the same size, it is overwhelmingly lean mass — which is worth measuring directly, in kilograms, rather than dressing up as an age designed to worry you.

Metabolic age is computed by inverting a basal metabolic rate equation with respect to age, so that the result is the age at which the supplied metabolic rate would be average for a person of the given height, weight and sex. This engine performs that calculation using Mifflin-St Jeor and then states its central limitation directly: because that equation contains terms only for weight, height, age and sex, and no term for body composition, fitness or any health marker, a metabolic age derived from a metabolic rate that was itself estimated by the same equation is an algebraic restatement of the inputs rather than new information. The engine records that the metric has no agreed clinical definition, no reference range, no validation establishing association with health outcomes, and no consistent implementation between manufacturers, appearing principally as an engagement feature in consumer body-composition devices whose underlying bioelectrical impedance estimates are themselves sensitive to hydration and recent activity. Where genuine between-person differences in resting metabolism exist at equal height and weight, the engine attributes them to lean tissue and recommends measuring that directly.
