What this result does not account for

  • This is the arithmetic only. Format, type size, nutrient order, footnote text, ingredient lists and allergen declarations are all required for compliance and are outside its scope.
  • Declared values are only as good as the analysed values entered. A laboratory analysis or a defensible database calculation is required for a real label.
  • Rules are those of the United States FDA. Canada, the EU, the UK and Australia and New Zealand each differ, notably in permitting or requiring different energy conversion factors.
  • Meat and poultry products are regulated by USDA FSIS under 9 CFR rather than by FDA, and although the rounding is largely parallel the governing text is different.

In short: A nutrition label is a regulatory artefact, not a measurement. Calories round to the nearest 5 below 50 and the nearest 10 above; grams round to the nearest whole gram. That is why label macros never re-multiply to label calories — the FDA says the gap is “due mainly to rounding rules”. It also legally permits a cooking spray of pure fat to declare 0 calories.

Worked Example

  1. Start from analysed values. Laboratory results or a defensible database calculation, unrounded.
  2. Apply each nutrient's own rule. The increments differ by nutrient and by magnitude, which is precisely why the printed figures stop reconciling with each other.
  3. Set the serving size from the RACC. Not from a convenient round number, and check whether dual-column labelling is triggered.
  4. Have it reviewed before printing. This tool does the arithmetic; a compliant panel also needs format, type sizes, ingredients and allergens.

A serving analysed at 6.4 g protein, 22.6 g carbohydrate and 7.4 g fat contains 182.6 kcal, which declares as 180. But the printed grams round to 6, 23 and 7, and reading those back gives 179. A one calorie discrepancy, with nothing wrong. Push the composition to 0.5 g protein, 0.5 g carbohydrate and 14.5 g fat and the same mechanism produces a label declaring 130 calories whose own printed grams read back as 143 — a thirteen calorie gap, fully compliant.

Rounding follows 21 CFR 101.9(c) exactly as written. Calories: under 5 declared as zero, 5 to 50 inclusive to the nearest 5, above 50 to the nearest 10. Fat and its subtypes: under 0.5 g as zero, under 5 g to the nearest 0.5 g, 5 g and above to the nearest 1 g. Carbohydrate, dietary fibre, sugars and protein: under 0.5 g as zero, 0.5 to 1 g declared as “less than 1 g”, 1 g and above to the nearest 1 g. Sodium and potassium: under 5 mg as zero, 5 to 140 mg to the nearest 5 mg, above 140 mg to the nearest 10 mg. Cholesterol: under 2 mg as zero, 2 to 5 mg as “less than 5 mg”, above 5 mg to the nearest 5 mg. Percent Daily Values for vitamins and minerals round to the nearest 2% up to 10% of the reference intake, 5% between 10% and 50%, and 10% above. Servings per container round to the nearest whole number except between 2 and 5, which round to the nearest 0.5 and carry the word “about”. Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed and the single-serving and dual-column thresholds of 200% and 300% follow the 2016 final rules at 21 CFR 101.12. Daily Values use the 2016 reference figures against a 2,000 calorie diet.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

Why do the macros on a nutrition label not add up to the calories

Because every nutrient is rounded independently, to different increments, before it is printed. Calories round to the nearest 5 below 50 and the nearest 10 above; protein and carbohydrate round to the nearest whole gram; fat rounds to the nearest half gram below 5 g. Multiplying the printed grams by 4, 4 and 9 therefore reproduces the printed calories only by coincidence. The FDA stated this directly in its 2016 rulemaking, attributing the discrepancy mainly to rounding.

How does the FDA round calories on a nutrition label

Under 5 calories may be declared as zero. From 5 to 50 calories, round to the nearest 5-calorie increment. Above 50 calories, round to the nearest 10. So 3 becomes 0, 47 becomes 45, and 148 becomes 150. The boundary matters: exactly 50 uses the nearest-5 rule while 51 uses the nearest-10 rule.

How can a cooking spray say zero calories

Because a serving is defined as roughly a quarter of a gram. That much pure fat contains about 2.25 calories, and both thresholds round it away: fat under half a gram declares as zero grams, and calories under five declare as zero calories. The label is fully compliant. A can of five hundred servings genuinely contains around 1,125 calories, every one of them lawfully declared as nothing.

What is a RACC and why are serving sizes so strange

The Reference Amount Customarily Consumed is set by statute from measured eating behaviour in the NHANES surveys. Serving sizes describe what people actually eat, not what they should eat, which is why the 2016 revision raised several of them: ice cream went from half a cup to two thirds, and soda from 8 fl oz to 12. Sizes that look odd usually reflect the household measure nearest the reference amount.

When is dual-column labelling required

When a container holds between 200% and 300% of the reference amount. One column shows the per-serving figures and the other the whole container. Below 200% the product must be labelled as a single serving outright. Above 300% a standard single column is sufficient. The rule exists because research showed consumers do not reliably multiply per-serving values by the serving count.

Why do the two columns on a dual-column label seem inconsistent

Because each column is rounded independently, and the FDA knowingly accepted this. Its own example: a per-piece value of 55.5 rounds to 60, while the two-piece value of 111 rounds to 110 — so two pieces appear to contain less than twice one piece. The agency declined to change the increments, noting that requiring the per-container figure to be a multiple would mean rounding twice.

Can two manufacturers print different calories for the same product

Yes, lawfully. 21 CFR 101.9(c)(1) permits four calculation methods: the general Atwater factors, those factors adjusted for non-digestible carbohydrate, food-specific Atwater factors, and bomb calorimetry with a protein correction. Manufacturers need not disclose which they used. Specific factors usually give slightly lower totals, since wheat protein is 3.78 rather than 4.0 and plant fat 8.84 rather than 9.0.

How are percent Daily Values rounded

Nutrients with a Daily Reference Value round to the nearest 1%. Vitamins and minerals use bands: to the nearest 2% up to 10% of the reference intake, the nearest 5% between 10% and 50%, and the nearest 10% above 50%. Amounts under 2% may be declared as zero or footnoted as an insignificant source.

Does this calculator produce a legally compliant label

No. It produces correctly rounded declared values, which is the arithmetic component. A compliant Nutrition Facts panel also requires laboratory analysis or a defensible database calculation, the prescribed nutrient order, specified type sizes such as 22 point for the calorie figure, the standard footnote, hairline and bar rules, an ingredient list in descending weight order, and allergen declarations. What does “less than 1 g” mean on a label

It is the required declaration for carbohydrate, fibre, sugars or protein present between 0.5 and 1 gram per serving. Below 0.5 g the nutrient declares as zero; from 1 g upward it declares to the nearest whole gram. The middle band gets words rather than a number because rounding it to either 0 or 1 would misrepresent it in one direction or the other.
