Worked Example

Density inverts the usual question. Instead of asking how much protein you ate today, it asks what each calorie bought you — and that reframing matters most under an energy constraint, because in a deficit every calorie has to work harder and low-density foods crowd out the ones doing real work. The almond case is the clearest illustration of why per-portion figures mislead: almonds are genuinely nutritious and deliver only about 3.6 g of protein per 100 kcal, because fat carries most of their energy. Chicken breast manages roughly 20 g. Neither fact makes almonds a bad food. Nutrient density expresses nutrient content relative to energy content rather than per portion, which inverts the conventional question and is the more informative framing under an energy constraint, since a restricted intake must still deliver adequate nutrition. This engine computes protein and fibre per hundred kilocalories and evaluates each against a benchmark: ten grams of protein per hundred kilocalories identifies a genuinely protein-dense food, and one point four grams of fibre per hundred kilocalories corresponds to the fourteen grams per thousand kilocalories guideline, so that eating consistently at that density meets the fibre target automatically. Added sugar is expressed as a share of portion energy because it contributes energy without accompanying nutrients and therefore dilutes every other density measure. Energy density in kilocalories per gram is reported separately, on the evidence that people consume a relatively consistent mass of food rather than a consistent quantity of energy, which makes energy density a more reliable predictor of satiety than macronutrient composition.
