Fat carries 9 kcal per gram. The saturated cap is a separate constraint from the total.

Worked Example

  1. Take the target percentage. 30% of 2,600 kcal = 780 kcal from fat.
  2. Divide by 9. 780 ÷ 9 = 87 g of fat a day.
  3. Bracket the acceptable range. 20–35% of 2,600 = 58 to 101 g.
  4. Apply the saturated cap. 10% of 2,600 ÷ 9 = 29 g saturated.
  5. Apply the cardiac target. 6% gives 17 g if you are actively lowering LDL.

A macro split will happily tell you to eat 87 g of fat and stop there, which leaves the more consequential question untouched. Two people can both hit 87 g with completely different cardiovascular outcomes depending on composition: the saturated cap of 29 g at 10% of energy, or 17 g at the stricter 6% used when actively lowering LDL, is a separate constraint that no percentage-based target expresses. The replacement also matters as much as the reduction — swapping saturated fat for unsaturated fat lowers LDL, while swapping it for refined carbohydrate largely does not, which is why decades of low-fat advice produced disappointing results. The floor deserves equal attention: below roughly 15 to 20% of energy you begin risking essential fatty acid adequacy and the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K.

Dietary fat is calculated from a target percentage of total energy at nine kilocalories per gram and bracketed against the acceptable macronutrient distribution range of twenty to thirty-five percent of energy. The engine treats saturated fat as a constraint separate from the total, reporting the ten percent of energy cap from general dietary guidance alongside the stricter six percent target recommended where lowering low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is an active objective, on the reasoning that two diets identical in total fat may differ substantially in cardiovascular effect and that a percentage split alone cannot express this. The engine states that the substitution matters as much as the restriction, since replacing saturated fat with unsaturated fat lowers low-density lipoprotein cholesterol whereas replacing it with refined carbohydrate largely does not. A lower bound is reported explicitly because fat intake below approximately fifteen to twenty percent of energy risks inadequate essential fatty acid intake and impaired absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
