What this result does not account for

  • Yoga varies more between teachers than almost any other activity. Two classes with the same name can differ in cost by a factor of two.
  • Oxygen uptake understates isometric work, so a class built on long held postures will feel harder than its MET value implies.
  • The measured Bikram figures come from one studio sequence and may not generalise to every heated class format.
  • Sweat rate varies enormously between individuals and with acclimatisation, so the water figure is yours alone and not a benchmark.
  • MET values describe population averages and carry roughly plus or minus 20% for any individual.

In short: A 90-minute Bikram class was measured by indirect calorimetry at 286 kcal, not the 700 to 1,000 commonly claimed. When the same sequence was run at room temperature and in a heated room, the difference was 5 kcal — heat makes you sweat, and sweating is not burning.

Worked Example

  1. Pick the MET value for the style, not for the room temperature. Hot yoga is 3.0 METs in the Compendium. The heat does not change the posture sequence, and measurement shows it barely changes the cost.
  2. Compute the gross cost. At 68 kg for 90 minutes: 3.0 x 3.5 x 68 / 200 x 90 = 321 kcal gross.
  3. Subtract resting metabolism. One MET of that was going to be spent regardless. Removing it leaves 214 kcal net, which is the figure that belongs in a deficit.
  4. Convert to fat, not to scale weight. 214 kcal divided by 7,700 kcal per kilogram is about 28 grams of fat.
  5. Compare that with what the scale said. A 1.2 kg post-class drop is 1.2 litres of water. The scale moved roughly forty times further than your body composition did.

Energy cost uses Compendium MET values by yoga style, cross-checked against direct indirect-calorimetry measurement of a full 90-minute Bikram class (mean oxygen uptake 9.5 ml/kg/min, 2.71 METs, 286 kcal) and against a controlled hot-versus-room-temperature trial that found a five-kilocalorie difference. Net cost subtracts one MET of resting metabolism. Body-fat equivalence uses 7,700 kcal per kilogram. Sweat loss is treated as water and assigned zero energy value, which is the physically correct treatment and the one most commonly got wrong.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

Can I lose weight doing yoga?

Why does a hard class feel harder than 3 METs?
