What this result does not account for
- Oxygen uptake understates isometric and eccentric work, which is most of what Pilates consists of. These figures are a floor on metabolic cost.
- The measured sessions used healthy young women. Older, male or substantially heavier practitioners were not represented.
- High-tempo circuit formats such as Lagree have not been measured the same way and are priced from Compendium estimates.
- The 3.0 MET threshold is a population convention, not a physiological boundary. A very deconditioned person may find mat Pilates genuinely demanding relative to their own maximum.
- Nothing here measures the neuromuscular, postural or rehabilitative value of the practice, which is the reason most people do it.

Worked Example
- Start from measured oxygen uptake, not a table. Mat Pilates was measured at 6.44 ml/kg/min and reformer at 8.67. Divided by 3.5 those are 1.84 and 2.48 METs.
- Compute the gross cost. At 68 kg for 50 minutes on the mat: 1.84 x 3.5 x 68 / 200 x 50 = 109 kcal gross.
- Subtract the resting share, which here is most of it. One MET of 1.84 is resting metabolism. Removing it leaves 50 kcal net — 46% of the gross figure.
- Compare the MET against the 3.0 threshold. 1.84 is below 3.0, so the class does not qualify as moderate-intensity activity under the physical activity guidelines.
- Audit the week. Three 50-minute classes is 150 minutes of practice and zero qualifying guideline minutes. The 150 still has to come from somewhere else.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

Yes, about 35% more, and that is a measured difference rather than an assumed one. The springs add genuine resistance. But 2.48 METs is still below the moderate-intensity threshold, so the reformer is not a cardiovascular machine with a different name.
Why does a hard class feel so much harder than 1.84 METs?
