What this result does not account for
- Leagues set their own basis score, percentage and vacancy score within the USBC framework; local standing rules override any default here.
- Only certified league games count toward an average. Practice games do not, and this page cannot tell which is which.
- Pre-bowled and make-up game handling varies by league and is not modelled.
- The page computes a single bowler's figures; full team standings involve points systems this does not touch.
- Rules cited are USBC. Other national federations use different conventions.
In short: Your average is total pins divided by games with the fraction disregarded, and your handicap is (basis − average) × percentage with fractions dropped. USBC rules truncate at both steps and never round. A calculator that rounds instead can run two pins per game high — six on a three-game series, which is enough to decide a match.

Worked Example
- Divide total pins by games and throw the fraction away. 442 pins over three games is 147.3333, so the average is 147. Not 147.3, and not rounded — disregarded.
- Subtract the average from the basis score. A 200 basis less a 147 average leaves a gap of 53 pins.
- Apply the percentage, then truncate again. 53 × 90% = 47.7, which becomes a handicap of 47. This is the second truncation, and it is where calculators that round diverge.
- Floor the result at zero. A bowler averaging at or above the basis score receives no handicap. Negative handicaps do not exist under USBC rules.
- Apply the absentee and vacancy rules separately. An absent member scores their average less 10 but keeps their full handicap. An empty roster position scores a flat 120.
Games of 157, 143 and 142 total 442 pins. Divided by three that is 147.3333, so the USBC average is 147. Against a 200 basis at 90%: (200 − 147) × 0.9 = 47.7, floored to a handicap of 47 pins per game. Rounding at both steps would have given 48 — three extra pins across the series.

Handicap is (basis score − average) × percentage with fractions dropped and a floor of zero, since USBC handicap is never negative. The page carries the absentee rule from Rule 112 (score of average less 10 pins, with handicap still computed from the full average), the vacancy score of 120, the treatment of a bowler with no established average, and the team target rule from 109d/8 (team average less 10 pins per player, and expressly not a percentage of team average). The 12-game threshold for USBC recognition of an average is applied to flag provisional figures. League standing rules override defaults, and the page says so.
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

What is an absentee score in bowling?
When a team member does not appear, USBC Rule 112 scores them at their current average less 10 pins. The important detail, and the one most calculators miss, is that their handicap is still based on their full average, not on the reduced score. A 147-average bowler contributes 137 plus their usual 47 handicap.
What is the difference between an absentee score and a vacancy score?
An absentee is a rostered member who did not turn up: average less 10, full handicap. A vacancy is an empty position the team never filled: a flat 120 unless the league rules say otherwise, with handicap based on that 120. They are separate rules and conflating them changes the result.
How many games do I need before I have an official average?
Twelve. USBC does not officially recognise an average until 12 games have been bowled. Before that you can still bowl and be handicapped — on the average of the games you have actually completed — but the figure is not established for tournament entry or award purposes.
What happens if I have no established average at all?
You are handicapped on the games you have bowled. If you have completed two games of 120 and 150, that is 270 pins over two games for an average of 135, and an absentee score of 125. If you have bowled nothing at all and are absent, the score is 120.
How much does one game change my average?
It depends entirely on how many games you already have. With 12 games on record a new game carries about 7.7% weight; with 60 games it carries 1.6%. This is why early-season averages swing wildly and late-season averages barely move — and why bowling a 300 in week 20 improves your average by less than you might hope.
Why does my league's sheet disagree with this calculator?
Three likely causes. The league may use a different basis or percentage than the one selected here. It may have adopted a local rule for vacancy scores or pre-bowled games. Or its software may be rounding where the rulebook truncates — which shows up as your figure being one or two pins higher than it should be.
What is the team target score and how is it set?
It is the team average less 10 pins per player, multiplied by the playing strength. USBC Rule 109d/8 specifically prohibits a league from using a percentage of the team average instead. When a member is absent, the team average is still built from their full average — the 10-pin deduction applies only to the score they are credited with.
