What this result does not account for

  • A MET value is an average across an intermittent sport. Basketball is sprints, jumps and stoppages, and no single value describes any given ten-minute stretch.
  • Position is not modelled. Guards and centres do metabolically different work over identical minutes.
  • The page cannot know your live-ball time, which is shorter again than your minutes played, because the clock stops on nearly every whistle.
  • Body mass is treated as a straight multiplier, which overstates the contribution of fat tissue.
  • MET-based estimates carry roughly plus or minus 20% for any individual even when the MET value is well chosen.

In short: Basketball has four nested clocks and most calculators use the wrong one. An NBA game runs about 135 minutes of real time, 48 minutes of game clock, and perhaps 28 minutes of rotation for any individual player. Pricing the full 135 minutes at 8.0 METs gives an 80 kg player 1,323 kcal net; pricing the 28 minutes actually played gives 274 kcal. The naive figure is 4.8× too high.

Worked Example

  1. Identify which clock you are holding. Real elapsed time at an NBA game is about 135 minutes, the game clock is 48, and a rotation player might see 28. These differ by a factor of five and only the third is exercise.
  2. Take the MET value for the format. The Compendium gives competitive game play 8.0 METs, pickup 6.5, drills 7.0 and shooting baskets 4.5. Competition is not simply harder practice.
  3. Apply the MET only to minutes on the floor. At 8.0 METs and 80 kg, each played minute costs 9.8 kcal net. Twenty-eight minutes is 274 kcal.
  4. Price the bench separately at 1.5 METs. Bench time is neither exercise nor nothing. Counting it as play inflates the total; dropping it entirely understates a long session slightly.
  5. Subtract resting metabolism. One MET of every minute was going to be spent regardless. Removing it gives the figure that belongs in a deficit.

An 80 kg player in a competitive game who logs 28 minutes and sits for 20: 28 minutes at 8.0 METs gives 274 kcal net, and the 20 bench minutes add 6. Pricing the full 135-minute elapsed time of an NBA game at the same MET would have reported 1,323 kcal — 4.8 times too high.

Energy cost is computed from Compendium of Physical Activities MET values for basketball — 8.0 for competitive game play, 6.5 for pickup, 7.0 for drills, 4.5 for shooting baskets and 6.5 for wheelchair basketball — converted at the standard 3.5 ml/kg/min. The MET is applied only to minutes the user was on the floor. Bench and waiting time is priced separately at 1.5 METs rather than being counted as play or discarded. Net cost subtracts one MET of resting metabolism from every minute. Game-clock and real-elapsed-time figures per level are used only to quantify the overstatement a user would have seen had they entered elapsed time instead of minutes played; they never enter the primary calculation.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

But pickup has no timeouts, no free-throw parades and no coach substituting you out, so the working share of the elapsed time can be higher. A hard open run and a league game can end up close.

Should I count the time I spend sitting out?

Count it, but at 1.5 METs, which is what this page does. Sitting on the sideline waiting for next is fractionally above resting. Twenty minutes of it adds about 6 kcal net for an 80 kg player — real, but not a workout. Counting bench time as play is how a two-hour open run turns into an imaginary thousand-calorie session.

How much does my position change the number?

More than this model can express. Guards cover the most ground and spend the most time in transition and full-court defence; centres do more high-force, short-distance work in the post, which is metabolically expensive in a way distance does not capture. A single MET value averages across all of it, so treat the figure as position-blind.

Why is shooting around priced so much lower?

Because it is 4.5 METs against 8.0. On the net basis this page uses — subtracting the one MET you would burn anyway — that works out at 50% cheaper per minute, exactly half. Shooting, rebounding your own ball and walking it back out is genuinely moderate activity, but it has no defence, no closeouts and no transition, and those are where a game's energy cost actually lives.

Does the level I play at change the MET value?

The Compendium does not distinguish NBA from a rec league, and neither does this page — the league selector only sets the game clock so the elapsed-time comparison is accurate. In reality a higher standard means faster transitions and harder defensive rotations, so a competitive league player at 8.0 METs is probably being priced conservatively.

How accurate is a MET estimate for a sport this intermittent?

Plus or minus 20% for any individual is the usual honest range, and basketball is at the harder end of that.
