In short: Reading 28, Listening 26, Speaking 24 and Writing 25 sum to 103 of 120 — a 25.750000 per-section average. The 0–30 sections and their 0–120 total remain the numbers universities list in their requirements, even as the shortened test now also reports CEFR-aligned 1–6 bands during the transition. There is no passing score — each university draws its own line, sometimes per skill.

Formula

total = R + L + S + W ··· each 0–30 ··· total 0–120 ··· new scale: 1–6 bands per skill

Four sections, thirty points each, one sum out of 120 — the arithmetic is the least interesting true thing about this test, which is why the page also carries the average your weakest skill drags and the dual-scale note: the shortened 2026-era test reports CEFR-aligned 1–6 bands alongside the traditional total while the transition runs.

Worked Example

  1. Enter the four section scores.
  2. Read the total against the university's minimum.
  3. Check the average card for the dragging skill.
  4. Note the 1–6 band scale riding alongside.

Defaults: 28, 26, 24, 25 → 103 of 120, average 25.750000. The weakest skill (Speaking, 24) sits 1.750000 below the average — the card makes the drag visible for retake planning.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Per-skill average exposes the dragging section
  • Dual-scale transition named honestly

Where it stops

  • No percentile context
  • No university-minimum lookup

Risk & accuracy notice. Section-sum arithmetic on the reported scale. Minimums — overall and per skill — are institutional; score validity runs two years from the test date.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

TOEFL Score Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs

8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

Is there a passing TOEFL score?

No — the test reports, institutions decide. The same 103 clears one university comfortably and misses another's graduate school minimum; competitive programs often publish both an overall floor and per-skill minimums, with Speaking the usual straitjacket. The requirement letter, not the scale, is the gate.

What changed with the shorter test?

The exam compressed to roughly ninety minutes with adaptive Reading and Listening, and the score report gained CEFR-aligned 1–6 bands alongside the traditional 0–120 — both scales during the transition period. The total here is the traditional arithmetic universities have listed for decades; the band note exists so the new report format does not surprise you.

How do raw answers become 0–30?

Reading and Listening convert correct answers through the test's scaling; Speaking and Writing are rubric-scored by human and automated raters, then scaled. This page starts from the four reported section scores, exactly as the certificate prints them, and does the sum institutions actually read.

Why does the average card matter?

Because retake strategy is triage. A 103 with even sections suggests a broad, modest lift; a 103 with one section dragging the average shows exactly where the cheapest points hide. The card prints the gap between your weakest skill and the average — the number that tells you whether to drill Speaking or celebrate.

How long are TOEFL scores valid?

Two years — the shortest shelf life of the major gates, on the theory that language drifts without use. Plan applications inside that window; a score earned freshman fall is expiring before senior-year applications in most timelines. The arithmetic here does not age, but the score report does.

What is MyBest scoring?

A superscore: ETS reports, alongside your single-sitting total, the summed best of each section across your attempts within two years. Institutions decide whether they read MyBest or the sitting — this page computes the sitting's honest sum and leaves the across-date besting to policies that vary by program. IELTS's One Skill Retake is the same idea wearing a different uniform.

What do the score's percentiles mean?

Percentiles drift with each year's testing population and are noisier than the section scores themselves — a 103 sits in a different crowd every cycle. Universities list raw minimums for exactly this reason: the requirement is printed on the 0–120 scale, not on a sliding rank. This page computes the scale facts and leaves the percentile folklore to the annual publications.

How does TOEFL relate to IELTS?

They are parallel English gates with different grains: TOEFL sums four 0–30 sections to a 120-total; IELTS averages four 0–9 bands with mercy rounding. Universities publish concordances — 'TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0' — but the tests measure with different task types and different scoring cultures, and this page never converts; it only sums what the certificate printed.
