What this result does not account for
- Skill bands in whole/half steps only
- No raw-answers conversion
In short: Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.0 and Speaking 6.5 average to exactly 6.5 — an overall Band 6.5. The rule's teeth show on the awkward fractions: an average ending .25 rounds UP to the next half band and .75 rounds UP to the next whole, so 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0. One extra half-band in Writing can be the whole university application.
Formula
overall = round-to-half(mean of L, R, W, S) ··· .25 → up to .5 ··· .75 → up to next .0
The overall band is the plain mean of the four skills, then pulled to the nearest whole or half band — with two mercy rules: averages ending .25 always climb to the next half, and .75 always climbs to the next whole. Everything else rounds to whichever band edge is nearer. Certificates never print 6.1 or 6.3; the scale only speaks in .0 and .5.
Worked Example
- Enter your four skill bands.
- Read the raw average and the reported band.
- Check the rule card on the awkward fractions.
- Compare against the university's stated minimum.
Defaults: 7.0, 6.5, 6.0, 6.5 → mean 6.500000, overall 6.5. Drive Writing to 6.5 and the mean hits 6.625 — still 6.5; lift it to 7.0 and the mean reaches 6.75, which rounds UP to a whole Band 7.0.

Methodology & Editorial Standards
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.
This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

IELTS Band Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs
8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.
What is the exact rounding rule?
Average the four skills, then round to the nearest half band with two exceptions that only round up: an average ending .25 goes to the next half band, and one ending .75 goes to the next whole band. So 6.25 becomes 6.5, 6.75 becomes 7.0, while 6.125 stays at 6.0 and 6.625 stays at 6.5. The page applies the rule to the exact mean and shows both numbers.
Why does .75 matter so much?
Because whole bands are where university offers live. A 6.75 rounding up to 7.0 can flip a conditional offer into an unconditional one; the same average under naive rounding would sit at 6.5. The mercy rules are IELTS's quiet gift — the fractions that would round down under school arithmetic climb instead, and the rule card shows exactly when it fires for your four numbers.
Which skill should I retake?
Whichever lifts the MEAN across a rounding boundary. Writing is commonly the drag — it is the skill examiners score most conservatively — and a half-band there moves the average by 0.125, which flips 6.375 to 6.5 or 6.625 to 6.75's neighbourhood. The raw-average card makes the arithmetic visible before you pay for another sitting.
Do all four sections matter equally?
Yes in the average — Listening counts exactly as much as Writing — though universities may set minimums per skill as well as overall. A 7.5 overall with a 5.5 in Writing fails many offers that ask for 6.0 in every band. The overall band is the headline; the fine print underneath it is where rejections hide.
How do raw answers become skill bands?
Listening and Reading convert correct answers to bands through published-ish boundaries that shift slightly per test; Writing and Speaking are examiner-scored against public rubrics. This page starts where the certificate does — four skill bands — and computes the overall. The certificate's four numbers are the input the official system itself uses.
What is One Skill Retake?
IELTS now lets you retake a single skill instead of all four — which makes the mean arithmetic on this page a retake-planning tool in the literal sense: lift Writing a half band and watch the overall cross the boundary your offer needs. The retake issues a new certificate with the new overall; the mercy rounding rules apply to it exactly as computed here.
When do results arrive, and what if I disagree?
Computer-delivered results typically land within days; the paper route takes longer. Examiners mark against published rubrics, and a formal Enquiry on Results re-marks one or more skills for a fee that is refunded if a band moves — a genuine option when a Writing band sits exactly on the boundary your offer needs. The arithmetic here is settled the moment the four bands are; the re-mark changes the inputs, not the rule.
Is 6.5 a good IELTS score?
It is the most commonly requested bar in the world of English gates — solidly competent user, inside most universities' undergraduate minimums, below the 7.0 some graduate and licensing bodies ask for. Bands describe proficiency tiers, not percentages; the famous nine-band scale runs from non-user to expert, and the university's stated minimum is the only number that actually gates your file.
