Wake Up Time Calculator

The alarm ladder — give it the bedtime and the fall-asleep lag, and it lists the cycle-aligned wake times: six cycles down to three.

What this result does not account for

  • One bedtime per run — the four alarms follow
  • Latency 0 to 180 minutes

In short: Lights out 23:00 with 15 minutes to fall asleep means asleep by 23:15 — and the alarms ring cycle-aligned at 08:15 (6 cycles, 9 h), 06:45 (5 cycles, 7 h 30 m), 05:15 (4 cycles) or 03:45 (3 cycles). Health's sleep calculator runs the same ladder the other way — bedtimes for a fixed alarm; this page fixes the bedtime and lists the alarms.

Formula

alarm(k) = lights-out + latency + k × 90 minutes, k = 6, 5, 4, 3

Planning forward from the pillow: the body falls asleep after the latency, completes 90-minute cycles, and the gentle alarms sit at cycle boundaries — six down to three. Four alarms, because a night shorter than three cycles is a nap wearing a night's clothes. The minutes wrap midnight without a fuss: a 01:00 lights-out lists morning alarms the same way. The 90 is the folk average, and the medical reading stays on health's pages.

Worked Example

  1. Enter when the lights go out.
  2. Say how long falling asleep usually takes.
  3. Pick the alarm that matches the night you can afford.

Defaults: lights out 23:00, asleep by 23:15 — alarms at 08:15, 06:45, 05:15, 03:45; six cycles costs 9 hours, three costs 4 h 30 m.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • All four rungs printed with their price
  • Midnight wrapped
  • Latency applied before the ladder starts

Where it stops

  • Ninety minutes is the average, not the user's body

Risk & accuracy notice. Cycle arithmetic is the folk convention; the medical reading is delegated to the linked health pages.

Practical Use Cases

Late nights

Shift flips

daylight bedtimes, wrapped

Travel

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Wake Up Time Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs

8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

How is this different from health's sleep calculator?

Direction. Health's page fixes the ALARM and lists the bedtimes that hit it cycle-aligned; this page fixes the BEDTIME and lists the alarms the cycles offer. Same ladder, opposite ends — and they link, so a plan can cross over the moment the evening stops cooperating.

Why do the alarms sit on cycle boundaries?

Because that is the folk trick: waking between cycles is the groggy way, waking at a boundary the gentle way. Whether the average cycle is exactly 90 minutes for you is a body question — health's pages own it. The arithmetic here just prints where the boundaries fall.

What do six to three cycles mean in hours?

Nine, seven and a half, six, and four and a half — the latency rides on top of each. The card prints the price of every rung so the choice is a trade you see: each cycle you skip buys 90 minutes of evening at a cost the morning collects.

Why stop at three cycles?

Because below three the list stops being a night. Three cycles is the honest floor of what the ladder offers; shorter than that and the word is a nap, and naps have their own arithmetic on the health pages.

Does the bedtime wrap midnight?

The alarms do: 01:00 lights out lists 10:15, 08:45, 07:15 and 05:45, exactly as 23:00 lists its own ladder. The wrap runs forward from lights-out, so a post-midnight bedtime reads the daylight alarms it actually implies.

What if I fall asleep instantly?

Set the latency to zero and the ladder starts at the lights-out minute: 23:30 lists 08:30, 07:00, 05:30, 04:00. The latency is not mandatory — it is the 15-minute honesty most nights charge.

Is this the same as counting back from the alarm?

It is the mirror run. Counting back fixes the wake and solves for bedtimes — health's page. Counting forward fixes the pillow and solves for alarms — this page. The 90-minute lattice is the same lattice; which end you hold decides which page you want.

Should I plan to the quarter hour?

Plan to the honest one: the ladder is exact arithmetic on the numbers you typed, riding on a 90 that is an average. Use the rungs as targets, not promises — the body rounds in its own units.
