What this result does not account for
- Ingredient prices vary by country, retailer, season and promotion, so any figure here is only as current as the prices you enter.
- The calculator cannot know how much of a part-used packet you will eventually waste, which sits between the cost and cash figures.
- Energy costs of cooking are excluded. They are small for most dishes but not negligible for anything with a long oven time.
- Comparisons against bought food depend heavily on local prices and portion sizes, which differ far more than ingredient costs do.
In short: Cost per serving is total ingredient cost ÷ servings, but two things trip it up. Pack sizes must be compared on a common unit — bulk is not automatically cheaper, and a $2.40/500 g pack and a $9.60/2 kg pack are exactly tied. And the cost of 6 g from a $6 spice jar is $0.80 while the cash you hand over today is $6.00. Both numbers are right; they answer different questions.

Worked Example
- Add up what the dish consumed. Attributing part-used packets by the share you actually used, not their full price.
- Divide by honest servings. The number of portions you really get, which is often fewer than the recipe claims.
- Normalise any pack comparison. Convert every option to price per 100 g or per litre before deciding which is cheaper.
- Decide what to do about time. Either leave it unpriced, or price it deliberately and knowingly — but do not let an hourly rate smuggle itself into a decision about a Tuesday evening.
A $14.50 recipe making four servings is $3.63 a portion. Buying the equivalent at $11.00 a head would be $44.00, so cooking saves $29.50, about 67%. But if a quarter of it goes uneaten, the real cost of each portion actually consumed rises to $4.83 — a third more than the headline figure, and still far below the bought alternative. Cooked weekly for a year the dish accounts for roughly $754 of spending.

Cost per person divides the same total by the headcount, which differs from cost per serving whenever the recipe's stated yield does not match the number of people eating. Waste is applied to the servings actually consumed rather than to the cost, since the money is spent regardless: the real cost per portion eaten is the total divided by servings multiplied by one minus the waste fraction. Pack comparison normalises every option to price per 100 g. Time is reported in hours and is left unpriced unless the user supplies an hourly value, a deliberate default because valuing domestic time at a wage rate assumes an alternative use that usually does not exist. The distinction between attributed cost and cash outlay follows standard cost accounting practice, where the cost of a part-used input is the proportion consumed rather than the purchase price.
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

How do you calculate cost per serving
Add the cost of the ingredients the dish actually consumed and divide by the number of servings it genuinely produces. The subtlety is in part-used packets: a recipe using a tablespoon from a jar should carry a fraction of that jar's price, not the whole thing. That gives you the cost. What you spend at the till today is a different and usually much larger number.
Is it always cheaper to cook than to buy
Usually but not always. Cooking wins comfortably for staples, batch dishes and anything built on cheap protein and vegetables. It can lose for single portions of dishes needing several specialist ingredients you will not finish, and for very cheap fast food at promotional prices. The comparison is only fair if you include delivery and tip on one side and unfinished ingredients on the other.
Is buying in bulk actually cheaper
Only when the unit price genuinely falls and you will finish the pack before it spoils. Both halves matter. A 500 g pack at $2.40 and a 2 kg pack at $9.60 are both exactly 48 cents per 100 g — identical value, but the larger one ties up four times the cash and four times the storage. Always convert to a common unit before deciding, because supermarket pack pricing does not reliably reward volume.
Should I include my own time in the cost
Only deliberately, and knowing what it does. Valuing cooking time at your hourly wage assumes the alternative was paid work, which on most weekday evenings it was not. The calculation is genuinely useful for choosing between two ways of spending the same hour, and misleading when used to argue that cooking is irrational. This calculator leaves time unpriced by default for that reason.
How does food waste change the cost per serving
It raises the cost of everything you do eat, because the money left your account regardless. If a quarter of a $14.50 recipe goes uneaten, the four nominal servings become three eaten ones and the real cost per portion rises from $3.63 to $4.83, a third more. Waste is usually the second largest line in a household food budget after protein, and it is the only one that is completely invisible.

The second and third time you cook it, the cash collapses to almost nothing and the cost stays the same.
