What this result does not account for

  • Session-based — no attribution or assist modelling.
  • No brand/non-brand segmentation input.
  • Assumes the paid CPC is a fair replacement price.

In short: 60,000 sessions are worth 81,000.00 to replace at the paid account's 1.35 CPC, 145,920.00 of revenue, and 61,286.40 of contribution — and organic converts 32.1429% below the paid account, which is exactly why the three must never be mixed.

Formula

media value = sessions × equivalent CPC

revenue = sessions × CVR × AOV

contribution = sessions × CVR × contribution per order

CVR discount = 1 − organic CVR ÷ paid CVR

[('media', 'replacement cost at your own CPC'), ('revenue', 'what the sessions sell'), ('contribution', 'what the sessions keep'), ('discount', 'why the three numbers disagree')]

Worked Example

  1. Convert sessions to orders at the organic CVR.
  2. Price orders at contribution for the keepable value.
  3. Price the same sessions at your paid CPC for media value.
  4. Price orders at AOV for revenue — and note what it ignores.
  5. Quantify the conversion discount that separates the three.

60,000 sessions at 1.9% convert 1,140 orders: 145,920.00 of revenue but 61,286.40 of contribution — 1.0214 per session, 735,436.80 a year. Replacing those sessions at the paid account's 1.35 CPC would cost 81,000.00 a month. And because organic converts 32.1429% below paid, the media figure and the contribution figure are answering different questions — permanently.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Three values computed on one session base
  • Prices the organic conversion discount explicitly
  • No cost field to smuggle a programme case through

Where it stops

  • No brand-segment split
  • CPC equivalence ignores auction depth

Risk & accuracy notice. Traffic valuations age quickly: CPCs, conversion rates and session mixes all drift. A media value quoted from last year's CPC is a number about last year.

Practical Use Cases

Traffic valuation

What a session is worth to chase by any means.

Forecasting

Revenue and contribution from session projections.

Channel mix debates

Why organic and paid sessions are not interchangeable.

Content due diligence

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Three valuations run on the same session count so their differences are pure definition: media value at the account's own paid CPC, revenue at AOV through the organic CVR, and contribution at per-order contribution through the same CVR. The discount card quantifies the organic-versus-paid conversion gap that forbids mixing the columns, and the per-session contribution is stated as the acquisition ceiling.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Organic Traffic Value Calculator — 10 Expert FAQs

10 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

What is organic traffic worth?

Whichever of three questions you are asking: what it costs to replace (sessions times your paid CPC), what it sells (sessions times CVR times AOV), or what it keeps (sessions times CVR times contribution). Here those are 81,000.00, 145,920.00 and 61,286.40 on identical traffic.

Why is contribution the right number for decisions?

Because revenue still owes the variable costs. A session valued at revenue funds a payroll only after product, shipping, payment and returns take their share — contribution is what remains, and it is 1.02 per session here against 2.43 of revenue.

Is valuing traffic at CPC legitimate?

As a replacement-cost estimate, yes — it is the standard framing. It becomes misleading when the CVR discount is ignored, because bought clicks would not convert at the organic rate and the comparison silently assumes they would.

Why does organic convert worse than paid?

Mixed intent: organic visitors are researching as often as buying, while paid clicks are usually further down the journey. A third below paid is a common gap; measure your own rather than borrowing one.

Should I use last-click revenue for organic?

Last-click understates organic's assist on journeys it opened and overstates nothing — it is the most conservative honest baseline. This page's arithmetic is session-based and channel-pure, which is the cleaner model for valuing the traffic itself.

What CPC should I use as the equivalent?

Your own account's blended CPC — here the 1.35 the store actually pays. Benchmark CPCs import someone else's auction, quality scores and geography.

Does brand organic traffic inflate the value?

Yes — branded sessions convert far better and would largely have arrived anyway. Segment brand from non-brand sessions before valuing, exactly as you would in the paid account.

How do I annualise honestly?

Multiply the monthly contribution by twelve only if the traffic is stable and maintained. Content decays without refresh investment, which is why the post-level page models lifespans rather than assuming persistence.

What is a session worth to acquire?

At these numbers, its contribution: 1.0214. That ceiling applies to any acquisition route — content, links, UX — and paying more per incremental session needs a repeat-purchase argument, not a media argument.

How is this different from the SEO ROI page?

That page compares return against a cost; this page has no cost field by design and values the traffic itself. Use this one for what sessions are worth, that one for whether the programme earns its budget.
