What this result does not account for

  • Payment rates vary by seller country and currency.
  • The offsite advertising threshold and rate differ by shop size.
  • Excludes optional subscriptions and promoted listings within Etsy.

In short: Offsite ads roughly double the take rate. Base fees on a 48.50 order are 6.02 (12.4124%), but an attributed offsite sale adds 7.28 — taking it to 13.30, or 27.4124%.

Formula

base = (price + shipping) × (transaction% + payment%) + fixed + listing

blended = base + offsite% × attributed share

[('transaction fee', 'applies to shipping too'), ('offsite ads', 'mandatory above a sales threshold'), ('blended', 'the rate that reaches your P&L'), ('listing fee', 'recurs on renewal and on each sale')]

Worked Example

  1. Add shipping to the item price — fees apply to both.
  2. Apply the transaction and payment rates to that total.
  3. Add the listing fee.
  4. Add the offsite ads fee on attributed orders only.
  5. Blend by the attributed share for your true average.

A 42.00 item with 6.50 shipping means the buyer pays 48.50, and the fees apply to all of it: 3.15 transaction at 6.5%, 1.71 payment at 3% + 0.25, and 0.20 listing — 5.06 in total, a 10.4278% base take rate. The transaction fee on the shipping alone is 0.42. An attributed offsite sale adds 7.28 at 15%, taking the total to 12.33 and the take rate to 25.4278% — 2.4386 times the base. At an 18% attribution rate the blended fee is 6.37, or 13.1278%, and that is the figure that belongs in contribution margin.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Charges fees on the full buyer payment including shipping
  • Reports the shipping fee effect as its own figure
  • Blends offsite ads by attribution rather than assuming an extreme

Where it stops

  • Country-specific rates
  • Excludes onsite promoted listings

Risk & accuracy notice. Offsite advertising becomes mandatory above a sales threshold, so a growing shop can cross it involuntarily and find its take rate has roughly doubled on attributed orders with no change in its own behaviour.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Fees are computed on the total the buyer pays, including shipping, because that is the base Etsy actually charges against — and the fee on the shipping portion is reported separately so the effect is visible. The offsite advertising fee is shown both at full rate on an attributed order and blended across the attributed share, with the page stating that the blended figure is the one belonging in contribution margin, since the base rate understates and the attributed rate overstates.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Etsy Fee Calculator — 10 Expert FAQs

10 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

What fees does Etsy charge?

A listing fee per item, a transaction fee on the total sale including shipping, payment processing as a percentage plus a fixed amount, and an offsite advertising fee on attributed sales. Base fees commonly total ten to twelve per cent, and offsite ads can roughly double that.

Does the transaction fee apply to shipping?

Yes, and it surprises most new sellers. The fee is charged on the total the buyer pays including shipping and gift wrap, so raising your shipping price hands back a share of the increase. Building shipping into the item price changes nothing because both are captured.

What are offsite ads and can I opt out?

Etsy promotes listings on external platforms and charges a substantial fee when a sale is attributed to one. Below a sales threshold participation is optional; above it, it becomes mandatory and cannot be switched off, so a growing shop can cross the line involuntarily.

How much do offsite ads really cost?

Enough to roughly double the take rate on an attributed order. The right way to model it is blended — the fee multiplied by the share of orders actually attributed — because neither the base rate nor the attributed rate describes your average order.

Is the listing fee charged more than once?

Yes. It applies when you publish, again when the listing renews after its term, and again on each sale for multi-quantity listings. A slow-moving listing therefore accumulates fees without producing revenue, which matters for large catalogues.

How does Etsy compare to other marketplaces?

Base fees are lower than most large marketplaces, which suits low-volume and handmade sellers, and there is no mandatory subscription. Once offsite advertising is included the all-in rate closes much of that gap.

Should I offer free shipping on Etsy?

The platform favours listings that do, but remember the fee applies to whatever you charge either way. Building carriage into the item price is generally the cleaner approach, since it improves search treatment without changing the fee base.

What margin do I need on Etsy?

Enough to absorb an all-in take rate that can exceed a quarter of the sale on attributed orders, plus your actual shipping cost, plus materials and time. Handmade sellers routinely underprice because they cost materials and forget everything else.

Does the payment fee vary by country?

Yes, both the percentage and the fixed component differ by seller location and currency, and cross-border sales can carry a conversion charge. Verify your own rates rather than using a published figure from another market.

Can I recover fees by raising prices?

Partly, but each increase is itself subject to the percentage fees, so recovery is never complete. Work backwards from the net you need using the blended take rate, rather than adding a percentage to your current price and hoping.
