What this result does not account for

Worked Example
- Break the hits out by length. Slugging needs singles, doubles, triples and home runs separately. A single hit total is not enough, which is what separates it from batting average.
- Weight each hit by its bases. 94 singles, 30 doubles, 4 triples and 22 home runs give 94 + 60 + 12 + 88 = 254 total bases.
- Divide by at-bats. 254 total bases over 520 at-bats is .488. Three decimals, no leading zero, and it is a rate rather than a percentage.
- Subtract batting average to isolate power. .488 slugging less a .288 average is .200 isolated power — extra bases per at-bat with the singles stripped out.
- Check the weights against run values. The formula says a home run is four singles. Measured run values say 2.27. Knowing the size of that bias is the difference between using the statistic and believing it.
