In short: A 20:00 5,000 m is 96.0 seconds per lap for 12.5 laps of lane 1. Lane matters more than most runners think: lane 1 measures 400.001 m along the line of running, lane 8 measures 453.03 m. The table published across the running internet says lane 8 is 453.66 m — it is wrong by 0.628 m every lap, because it applies lane 1’s 30 cm measurement offset to all eight lanes.

L is the lap length along the line of running in lane n. The offset o is where World Athletics measures that lane: 0.30 m outside the kerb in lane 1, but only 0.20 m outside the inner line in every other lane.

Worked Example

  1. Enter the distance and target time. The full distance of the run, and the time you are aiming for.
  2. Choose the lane. Lap length grows with lane number, and the difference is larger than most runners assume.
  3. Read the per-lap split. The hero figure is the time for one lap of that lane, not of a nominal 400 m.
  4. Use the cumulative schedule. Mid-session it is easier to check the running clock against a lap number than to recompute a split.
  5. Check the lane cost. If you are not in lane 1, the engine shows how much extra distance and time the outer lane is costing over the session.

5,000 m in 20:00 in lane 1: 12.50 laps of 400.001 m at 96.0 s per lap, which is 4:00/km. The same 12.5 laps in lane 8 would cover 5,663 m, not 5,000 m.

Lane distances are computed from the World Athletics Track and Field Facilities Manual geometry: two straights of 84.39 m, a construction radius of 36.50 m, and a lane width of 1.22 m. Critically, the line of running is taken 0.30 m outside the kerb in lane 1 but only 0.20 m outside the inner line in lanes 2 to 8, exactly as the manual specifies. That asymmetry is what most published lane tables omit. Two independent published figures verify the implementation: the engine returns 400.001 m for the lane 1 line of running and 398.116 m for the kerb line, both matching the manual, and its 200 m staggers agree with the manual's marking plan for all eight lanes to within one millimetre. The widely reproduced alternative table, which gives lane 8 as 453.66 m, inflates every lane from 2 outwards by a constant 2π × 0.10 = 0.628 m.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. How many laps is a mile?

4.02 laps of lane 1, since a mile is 1,609.344 m. In lane 8 it is 3.55 laps. The classic four-lap race is 1,600 m, which is nine metres short of a true mile — that is why milers race 1,609 m and school meets often run 1,600 m.

What is a stagger and how is it calculated?

The forward offset given to outer lanes so every athlete runs the same distance. It equals the extra length that lane's bends add for the number of bends run in lane. For a one-lap race in lane 8 that is 53.03 m; for a 200 m, half of it, 26.52 m.

Why is the lane width 1.22 metres?

It is the World Athletics standard, set at 1.22 m with a tolerance of 1 cm and including the 5 cm line on the outside. Some older American tracks use 1.067 m, which changes every lane distance, so a table built for one standard is wrong for the other.

Does the lane really matter for a training session?

More than most runners assume. Twelve 400 m repetitions in lane 4 cover 269 m more than the same session in lane 1. That is most of another repetition, unrecorded, and it makes the session times incomparable between weeks if the lane changes.

What about indoor tracks?

Indoor ovals are usually 200 m, often banked, and vary far more between facilities than outdoor tracks do. The 200 m option here scales the outdoor lane geometry as an approximation. If precision matters, use the custom lap length and the figure your facility publishes.

Is my school track really 400 metres?

Often not. Many school and club tracks are non-standard: 350 m, 440 yards, or built with a different bend radius. If a certified distance is not posted, measure it with a calibrated wheel along the line of running, and use the custom option here.

Why is the kerb line 398.116 m rather than 400?

Because the race distance is measured along the line of running, not along the kerb. Athletes cannot run on the kerb, so the measurement line is placed 30 cm outside it, and that 30 cm of extra radius on both bends adds the 1.885 m that brings the lap to 400.001 m.

How do I convert a lap split into a pace per kilometre?

Divide the lap time by the lap length in kilometres. In lane 1 a 96-second lap is 96 ÷ 0.400001, which is 240 s/km, or 4:00/km. In lane 8 the same 96-second lap is a considerably faster 3:32/km, because you covered 53 m more.

What does the half lap in a 5,000 m mean for pacing?

The race starts on the back straight, so the first marker you cross is not a full lap. Count laps from the finish line rather than from the start, or you will be half a lap out for the whole race.

Should I run intervals in lane 1?

Where etiquette allows, yes, for consistency. But lane 1 takes the most wear and is usually reserved for faster runners in a busy session. The practical answer is to pick a lane and stay in it, and record which one, so the session is comparable next time.

Does drifting wide on the bends add much distance?

Running one lane wide for a whole lap adds about 7.67 m. Over a 25-lap 10,000 m that is 192 m — roughly 45 seconds for a 4:00/km runner. Holding a tight line on the bends is one of the cheapest improvements available on a track.

What is the radius of a standard track bend?

36.50 m to the kerb on the construction line. The line of running in lane 1 is 36.80 m, and each successive lane adds 1.22 m to the radius, which is where the 2π × 1.22 = 7.665 m per lane comes from.

Can I use this calculator for a road loop?

Why do 400 m races start at different points in each lane?

Because each lane's bends are longer. The stagger positions every athlete so that all eight cover exactly 400 m. Races of 800 m and longer either use a smaller stagger with a break line, or a waterfall start, because athletes are allowed to cut in.

How accurate are these distances?
