What this result does not account for

  • Counts words only — no character-mode essays
  • Supplemental limits are school-set; check each prompt

In short: 612 words sits inside the Common App personal statement's 250–650 window — enforced at both ends, the portal blocking anything shorter and truncating anything longer — and lands in the 550–650 band coaches target. Against the UC Personal Insight Questions the same draft is 262 words over the 350 cap, which the box simply will not keep. One draft, three contracts, and the arithmetic of each.

Formula

Common App 250–650 (enforced) ··· UC PIQ ≤ 350 × 4 essays ··· Coalition 500–650 ··· coach band 550–650

The Common App personal statement enforces 250 to 650 words at the platform level: under 250 will not submit, over 650 is cut off mid-sentence. The UC system asks four Personal Insight Questions of at most 350 words each — 1,400 words of total budget. The Coalition essay suggests 500–650. Coach guidance lands the strongest personal statements at 550–650.

Worked Example

  1. Count your draft's words.
  2. Read the Common App verdict — floor, cap, band.
  3. Check the UC ledger if you are applying there.
  4. Trim to the band, never to the cap.

Defaults: 612 words → inside 250–650, inside the 550–650 target band. The 720 drive trips the cap — the portal truncates at 650; the 180 drive trips the floor — the portal refuses under 250.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • All three contracts checked at once
  • Enforcement mechanics named, not guessed

Where it stops

  • No per-school supplement database
  • No quality feedback — length is not merit

Risk & accuracy notice. Comparison arithmetic against published platform limits. Limits are set by each application platform and school; verify the prompt's own stated cap before submitting.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Essay Word Count Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs

8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

Is the 650-word cap negotiable?

No — it is enforced by the application itself. The Common App text box stops accepting input at 650 and a longer draft pasted in gets cut off, sometimes mid-sentence, with the remainder silently gone. Admissions readers would see the truncated version. There is no appeals path; the essay that fits the box is the essay that exists.

What happens below 250 words?

The portal refuses to submit. The floor is as hard as the cap — the system treats anything under 250 as an unfinished personal statement. Even where a short answer might squeak through technically, readers consistently describe thin essays as underdeveloped; the space exists to render one scene with reflection.

How do the UC Personal Insight Questions differ?

No single grand statement: the UC system asks you to answer four of eight prompts, each capped at 350 words, and the same four responses go to every campus. The total budget is 1,400 words, best spent as four distinct portraits rather than one essay chopped up. There is no enforced minimum, but responses under 200 read as unfinished.

Where should I aim inside the window?

Coach consensus lands at 550–650 for the personal statement: enough room for a scene, a shift and a reflection without padding. Exactly 650 is acceptable if every sentence earns its place; essays well under 500 disproportionately read as thin. The band is guidance, the 250–650 window is law.

Do hyphenated words count as one or two?

One — word counters split on whitespace, and the Common App's counter follows the same convention. What matters more is that you count with the same tool the portal uses: paste the draft into the actual box before finalizing, because word-processors disagree with each other at the margins (footnotes, em-dashes, standalone symbols).

What about supplemental essays?

Schools set their own — typically 100 to 400 words, with 'why this college' prompts clustered at 200–400. The stated limit in the prompt is the contract; some supplement boxes technically allow overflow, but exceeding a stated limit signals you did not read the instructions, which is a self-inflicted wound in an application.

Did the Additional Information section change?

Yes — it shrank to 300 words from 650 for the 2025-26 cycle, so old guides overstate the space. It is optional and best used for genuine context (circumstances, interruptions), not a second essay. Activities and honors descriptions are character-counted instead: 150 and 100 characters respectively.

Is a longer essay a stronger essay?

Only to a point, and the enforced caps are the system's way of saying so. Word count clusters tell readers something — the advice to use most of the space exists because underfilled essays usually lack reflection, not because length itself scores. The arithmetic on this page is the contract; the writing is everything else.
