What this result does not account for
- Working days 0 to 365; week 1 to 7; day length 1 to 12 hours
- Accrual card prices the common biweekly convention, not your policy
In short: 10 vacation days at the five-day week reads 2 full weeks away; at a four-day week the same 10 days stretch to 2.5. In paid hours a standard 8-hour day makes it 80 hours — one biweekly accrual wave at 15 days a year moves 62.4 hours a month. The bank arithmetic rides alongside: starting balance, plus what accrues while you are away or working, minus the trip.
Formula
weeks = days ÷ work-week days; bank cost = days × hours per day
A vacation is spoken in days but lived in weeks: dividing by the length of your own work week converts honestly — a four-day week makes ten days two and a half weeks, which is a different trip than the five-day reader gets. The bank cost multiplies by the hours one day charges, because PTO banks speak in hours. Accrual does not pause while you are away: paid vacation accrues like any other week in most policies, and the card prices that month so the trip and the bank can be compared in one glance.
Worked Example
- Enter the days you plan to take.
- Say how long your work week runs.
- Read the trip in weeks and the bank in hours.
Defaults: 10 days at the five-day week = 2 full weeks; 80 hours off the bank; 2 weeks away accrues about 46 hours at the 15-day policy's pace.
Strengths & Limits Of This Model
Where this engine is strong
- Week length is an input, not an assumption
- Bank cost and accrual on one grid
- Paid-leave accrues-while-away said plainly
Where it stops
- No holiday-aware calendar — count those days yourself
Practical Use Cases
Trip planning
the weeks a day count buys
Bank checks
the hours the trip really costs
Four-day weeks
the same days, longer away
Methodology & Editorial Standards
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.
This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Vacation Days Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs
8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.
Are these calendar days or working days?
Working days — the days your job would otherwise have claimed. The week length you enter converts them to weeks: ten working days is two five-day weeks, two and a half four-day ones. Weekends were never yours to spend.
How long is 10 days in weeks?
It depends on the week you work: two weeks at five days, two and a half at four, one and two-sevenths at seven. The card prints your number, not an assumed five — shift workers see their own arithmetic for once.
Does vacation accrue while I am away?
In most policies, yes — paid leave is hours worked for accrual purposes. The card prices the accrual over the trip using the common biweekly pace, as arithmetic, not a promise: your policy's periods and rate override it, and caps or waiting periods are the handbook's fine print.
What does the bank cost in hours?
Days times the hours one day charges — eight by the standard, adjustable because part-time schedules and unusual shifts charge differently. PTO banks hold hours, not days, which is why the conversion rides on every card.
How is this different from the PTO page?
Direction again. The PTO page builds the bank from the rate and the periods; this page spends it — it takes the days you dream of and prices the weeks and the hours. Same ledger, opposite ends, and they link.
What about public holidays inside the trip?
A holiday the office already closes does not spend your bank — the trip stretches a day for free. Count only the days the office would have opened; the holiday-pay page prices the day itself when policy pays it.
Do part-timers get the same math?
The arithmetic is identical; the numbers differ. A three-day week turns ten days into over three weeks away — which is exactly the honest reading, and the reason the week length is an input rather than a five the page assumes.
Why no year total?
Because the yearly ledger already has a page: accrual rates, periods and caps are the PTO page's territory. This page answers the narrower question — what do these days cost and how long are they — and leaves the annual reconciliation to its own tool.
