What this result does not account for
- Age line only — no district or TK policy
- Cutoff is an input; the page names the convention
In short: A birth date of Monday, 15 June 2021 against the September 1 cutoff reads a fifth birthday of Monday, 15 June 2026 — on time, so kindergarten opens fall 2026 and the child sits in kindergarten now, on the as-of date. Turn five after the line and the whole ladder shifts a year: the page prints the miss in days, because a late birthday is a calendar fact, not a readiness verdict.
Formula
K fall = year of the 5th birthday, if the birthday lands on or before the cutoff — else the next year
The convention this page prices: a child who turns five on or before the cutoff starts kindergarten that fall. September 1 is the most common state line but states range from late July to January — the cutoff is an input, stated as the convention it is. The school year keys on the fall: on or after July 1 the year is already next year's numbering. Grade N runs five years on: K at five, first grade at six.
Worked Example
- Enter the birth date, the cutoff, the as-of date.
- Read the fall kindergarten opens.
- Check the grade right now and the miss in days.
Defaults: born 15 June 2021, Sep 1 cutoff — K fall 2026, kindergarten now; a Sep 15 birthday misses the line by 14 days and opens fall 2027.
Strengths & Limits Of This Model
Where this engine is strong
- The miss priced in days, not vibes
- Grade-now follows the same identity as K
Where it stops
- One cutoff per run
Practical Use Cases

Methodology & Editorial Standards
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.
This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

School Age Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs
8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.
Which cutoff should I enter?
Your state's — the most common line is September 1, but states run from July 31 to January 1 and a few let districts set it. The input takes any MM-DD, and the chips carry the common ones.
What if the birthday is after the cutoff?
Kindergarten opens the following fall, and the line card prints the miss in days — 14 for a September 15 birthday against September 1. The delay is a calendar fact; readiness is a conversation the page stays out of.
What is redshirting?
Holding a child out a year despite eligibility, so they enter as the oldest rather than the youngest. The page prices the calendar, not the choice — enter a cutoff a year later and the arithmetic shows the redshirted ladder exactly.
Why does the school year key on July 1?
Convention, stated: the year is numbered by its fall, so from July 1 the page treats the next fall as current. Before July, the running year is still the spring's.
How does grade count from K?
Kindergarten is year zero — grade equals the fall years since the K year, to the 12th-grade cap. An eighth grader in 2026-27 opened K in fall 2018; the page runs the same identity forward and back.
What about a February 29 birthday?
The birthday clamps to February 28th in common years — the same convention the birthday and age pages use, so the fifth-birthday line is the date every page agrees on.
Does the page model transitional kindergarten?
No — TK and pre-K are program choices layered on top of the age line. A child a year short of the line reads “before kindergarten” with the K year named; the program naming belongs to the district.
How far can the ladder run?
Past 12th grade the page says so — the cap is the ladder's, not the calendar's. Birth years from 1900 to 2035 are all fair game; the grade verdict simply follows the identity.
