What this result does not account for

  • Four-digit minutes-only stamps, 0000 to 2359 (2400 as the closing door)
  • 12-hour inputs 1 to 12 with minutes 0 to 59
● Zero-Server Execution Updated 11 Aug 2026 Reviewed by Sana Khalid IEEE-754 Double Precision

In short: 1745 reads 5:45 PM and is spoken “seventeen forty-five hours”; the reverse grid takes 5:45 PM back to 1745. AM hours pad to four digits, PM hours add twelve, noon stays 1200, and midnight is 0000 when it OPENS the day and 2400 when it CLOSES it — railway timetables depart at 0000 and arrive at 2400, and the next minute after 2400 is 0001.

Formula

AM: pad to four digits · PM: hour + 12 · 12 AM → 0000 · 12 PM → 1200

Military time is the 24-hour clock written without a colon and without dropped zeros: 0830, never 8:30 or 830. The arithmetic lives in the hour alone — morning hours keep their value padded to four digits, afternoon hours add twelve, and the two twelve o'clocks are the special cases everyone flubs: 12 AM is 0000 and 12 PM is 1200. Midnight carries two names on purpose: 0000 opens the day, 2400 closes it, and timetables use the pair to mark departures from arrivals.

Worked Example

  1. Type the four-digit clock to read it civil.
  2. Type the 12-hour time to read it military.
  3. Say it: the spoken form follows the digits.

Defaults: 1745 reads 5:45 PM, spoken seventeen forty-five hours; 5:45 PM reads 1745.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Both directions, one grid
  • Spoken form printed per input
  • The 0000/2400 pair named, not glossed

Where it stops

  • No seconds — schedules run to the minute

Risk & accuracy notice. None material — pure clock arithmetic.

Practical Use Cases

Schedules

the four-digit stamp, clean

Aviation and hospitals

no AM/PM to mishear

Timetables

0000 departures, 2400 arrivals

Methodology & Editorial Standards

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Military Time Converter — 8 Expert FAQs

8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

Why drop the colon?

The four-digit block is faster to transmit and impossible to read two ways — the entire reason the format exists. 1745 cannot become 5:45 by a squint the way 5:45 can become 6:45 on a bad photocopy. Leading zeros stay: 0800, not 800, so every stamp is exactly four digits.

How do I convert 12 AM and 12 PM?

The two special cases: 12 AM is midnight and reads 0000; 12 PM is noon and stays 1200. Every other AM hour keeps its number padded (9:30 AM → 0930); every other PM hour adds twelve (5:45 PM → 1745). The page prices both specials on their own cards.

When is it 0000 and when 2400?

Both are midnight; the difference is which edge of the day you mean. A day OPENS at 0000 and CLOSES at 2400 — railway timetables depart at 0000 and arrive at 2400. Most electronics only use 0000, and the next minute after 2400 is 0001 of the new day.

How is it spoken?

Hundreds, never thousands: 1100 is eleven hundred, not one thousand one hundred. Leading zeros are pronounced: 0500 is zero five hundred (or oh five hundred). With minutes the pairs read out: 1745 is seventeen forty-five, 0045 is zero zero forty-five. On the radio the digits exaggerate — tree, fower, fife, niner — but that is protocol flavor, not the format.

Is military time the same as 24-hour time?

Almost — the arithmetic is identical, the dress code differs. 24-hour time writes a colon and may drop the leading zero (17:30, 8:30); military time writes neither colon nor dropped zero (1730, 0830) and adds the spoken hundreds form. Same day, different uniform.

Why not just say AM and PM?

Because they are the failure point: misheard over a radio, misread on a roster, wrong by twelve hours with no trace. Aviation, hospitals and the military standardized on one unambiguous cycle — 0800 and 2000 are twelve hours apart at a glance, with nothing to mishear.

What about seconds?

The four-digit format is minutes-only by convention; where seconds matter, 24-hour notation with a colon carries them (17:45:30) — that is the time calculator and duration pages' territory. This page converts the clock the way schedules write it.

How do I say a time ending in zero minutes?

As hundreds: 1200 is twelve hundred hours, 0900 zero nine hundred, 2300 twenty-three hundred. The moment minutes appear the pairs read out — 1730 seventeen thirty, 1705 seventeen zero five — and the spoken card prints both forms for whatever you type.
