What this result does not account for
- Caffeine content is estimated from a nominal 1.2% of dry weight. Actual content varies with species, origin and roast, and robusta carries roughly double the caffeine of arabica.
- Retention is a single figure. Pressing or squeezing the grounds recovers more liquid than the model assumes, at some cost to clarity.
- Extraction in cold water is slower and less complete than hot brewing, so cold brew ratios are not directly comparable to hot brew ratios at equal numbers.
- Ice melt is mentioned but not modelled, and it varies enormously with glass size, ice temperature and how long the drink sits.
In short: Cold brew is made at two quite different strengths. A concentrate is 1:4 to 1:6 and must be diluted; ready-to-drink is 1:8 to 1:12 and is not. To take a 1:4 concentrate down to drip strength at 1:16 you add three parts water to one part concentrate. The familiar “dilute 1:1” lands on 1:8, which is still about twice the strength of drip coffee.

Worked Example
- Decide concentrate or ready to drink. This is the fork in the road. A concentrate is an ingredient you will dilute; a ready-to-drink brew is finished. Recipes that omit this distinction cause most cold brew disappointment.
- Weigh coffee and water. Coarse grind, cold filtered water, everything in grams. Stir once so no dry pockets remain, then leave it alone.
- Steep and strain on time. 12 to 16 hours in the refrigerator for a ready-to-drink ratio, 18 to 24 for a strong concentrate. Strain through mesh, then paper if you want clarity.
- Dilute to taste, counting the ice. Add the calculated parts of water or milk. If the drink is going over a full glass of ice, expect a further 50 to 100 g of dilution as it melts.
100 g of coarse coffee steeped in 500 g of water at the standard 1:5 concentrate ratio yields only about 300 g of concentrate, because the grounds keep 200 g — a 40% loss, the worst of any brewing method. To bring that concentrate to drip strength at 1:16 you add 2.2 parts of water, which is 660 g, giving 960 g of finished cold brew: four generous glasses. Diluting it the popular one-to-one instead would give 600 g at 1:10, roughly 1.6 times the strength of drip.

Is diluting cold brew one to one correct
It is consistent, but it does not give you a drip-strength cup. A 1:4 concentrate diluted one to one becomes 1:8, which is about twice the strength of drip coffee at 1:16. That is the intended ready-to-drink strength, and the missing assumption is ice: a full glass of ice adds another 50 to 100 g of water as it melts and finishes the dilution. Why do I get so much less cold brew than water I added
Because the grounds keep roughly twice their own weight in water, and cold brew uses an unusually large dose. At 1:5, brewing 500 g of water over 100 g of coffee returns only about 300 g — a 40% loss. A drip brew at 1:16 loses only about 11%. What grind size should I use for cold brew
Coarse, comparable to French press or slightly coarser. Cold water extracts slowly, and the long steep is what compensates. A fine grind over 16 hours over-extracts into bitterness and, more practically, creates a sludge that is extremely difficult to filter. Strain through fine mesh first, then paper or cloth if you want a clean cup, and do not force the paper stage.
Is cold brew stronger in caffeine than regular coffee
The concentrate certainly is, because the ratio is so much tighter — typically 100 to 200 mg per 6 oz before dilution, against 80 to 120 mg per 8 oz for drip.
