Worked Example
- Get the diameter. A US 7 is 11.63 + 0.8128 × 7 = 17.32 mm.
- Multiply by π. 17.32 × π = 54.41 mm of circumference.
- That figure is the European size. EU 54, by definition under ISO 8653.
- Subtract forty for France. EU 54 becomes a French 14.
- Allow for the band. Over 6 mm wide, go up about half a size.
The one system that needs no conversion. European ring sizing under ISO 8653:2016 is not a scale at all — it is the measurement itself. A size 54 ring has an inner circumference of 54 millimetres, so if you wrap a strip of paper around your finger and it reads 54 mm, you are a 54. There is no chart, no lookup and no rounding. Every other system in the world sits on top of that physical fact: the US scale converts it into a number by way of diameter, the UK into a letter, France by subtracting forty, and Japan by consulting a table. When a conversion between two of those disagrees between sources, the millimetres are what to fall back on.

Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

Does band width affect what size I need?
Yes, noticeably. A wide band covers more of the finger and grips more surface, so it feels tighter than a narrow band of the same nominal size. The trade rule is to go up a quarter size for bands of 4 to 6 mm and a half size above 6 mm. Comfort-fit bands, which are domed on the inside, partly offset this and sometimes need no adjustment at all.
How much does finger size vary during the day?
By up to half a size. Fingers are smaller when cold and in the morning, and larger when warm, after exercise, late in the day, and after salty food. Pregnancy, flights and hot weather all push in the same direction. For a ring that will be worn constantly, measure warm and late rather than cold and early, so it is never impossible to remove.
Can any ring be resized?
No. Plain gold, silver and platinum bands resize readily, usually within a size or two either way. Eternity bands set with stones all the way around cannot be resized without remaking them. Tension settings lose their geometry. Titanium, tungsten carbide, ceramic and most alternative metals cannot be worked at all, so those must be ordered in the correct size from the outset.
