Pool Volume Calculator
Gallons by shape — rectangle and oval live in the form, the kidney’s two-width law lives on its card, and every answer drives the turnover pump rate.

Results recalculate instantly on every keystroke. Nothing you type is transmitted.
What this result does not account for
- Rectangular and oval in-form; kidney via its card law.
- Standard single-slope floors; hoppers under-estimate.
- No displacement for spas, ledgers or waterfalls.
In short: A 16×32 pool at 3.5-to-8 ft: average depth 5.75 ft, 2,944 ft³ × 7.48052 = 22,022.65 gallons, turning over in 8 hours at 45.9 GPM. The same pool flat at 5 ft holds 19,150 — the sloped floor is 2,873 gallons you cannot skip in the dose math.
Formula
gallons = L × W × shape × avg depth × 7.48052
avg depth = (shallow + deep) ÷ 2
oval: multiply by π/4 = 0.785
pump GPM = gallons ÷ (hours × 60)
[('7.48052', 'US gallons per cubic foot, exact'), ('0.785', 'π/4 — the oval’s honesty factor'), ('0.45', 'the kidney two-width law'), ('8 h', 'the standard turnover cycle')]
Worked Example
- Measure length and width at waterline; pick the shape.
- Average the end depths for the sloped floor.
- Multiply area × depth × 7.48052.
- Divide by turnover hours × 60 for pump GPM.
- Kidneys: measure both widths, use the card law.
16 × 32, 3.5/8 ends: avg 5.75 ft → 22,022.65 gal → 45.9 GPM at 8-hour turnover. Flat at 5 ft the same pool holds 19,150 — slope matters. Oval 30×15 at 5 ft: 13,212 gal.
Strengths & Limits Of This Model
Where this engine is strong
- Exact 7.48052 — not the trade’s rounded 7.5
- Oval and kidney laws honestly separated
- Turnover GPM straight from the gallon count
Where it stops
- Freeform shapes need sectioning by hand
- No heater or chemical modeling
Practical Use Cases

Methodology & Editorial Standards
Volume = surface × mean depth × 7.48052 exactly, with the shape factor carrying rectangle (1) and oval (π/4) as chips; the kidney’s two-width law (0.45 × (A+B) × L × avgD × 7.48) is a worked card because its inputs differ from the form’s. Average depth = (shallow + deep) ÷ 2, deep ≥ shallow enforced. Turnover rate = gallons ÷ (hours × 60) at the entered 0.5-48 h. Nonpositive dimensions, inverted depths and factors past 1 refused.
Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.
This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

Pool Volume Calculator — 8 Expert FAQs
8 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.
How do I calculate my pool’s volume?
Length × width × average depth × 7.48052 for rectangles — 16×32 at 3.5-to-8 ft is 22,022.65 gallons. Average depth is (shallow + deep) ÷ 2.
Why does average depth matter so much?
Because the dose scales with it: the same 16×32 shell holds 22,023 gallons sloped but 19,150 flat. Guess the slope away and every chemical dose runs about 12% heavy.
How do I measure an oval pool?
Same length × width × depth, times π/4 (0.785). A 30×15 oval at 5 ft holds 13,212 gallons — about 21% less than the bounding rectangle.
What about kidney-shaped pools?
Measure the length and BOTH bulge widths: 0.45 × (A + B) × L × avg depth × 7.48. A 28-ft kidney with 14 and 10-ft bulges at 5 ft holds 11,310.55 gallons.
What pump flow rate do I need?
Gallons ÷ (turnover hours × 60). One 8-hour turnover on 22,023 gallons is 45.9 GPM — the number the filter and pipe sizing hang on.
How many gallons is a typical pool?
Small 12×24 at 4.5-ft average: about 9,695. The classic 16×32 sloped: about 22,023. Large 20×40 at 5.75: about 34,410. Most homes live between 10,000 and 30,000.
Does 7.5 vs 7.48 matter?
Trade charts round to 7.5; the exact figure is 7.48052 gallons per cubic foot. On 22,000 gallons the rounding drifts about 98 gallons — more than a maintenance dose.
How long does it take to fill a pool?
Gallons ÷ your fill rate: 22,023 gallons at a 20-GPM hose is about 18.4 hours — start in the morning and mind the water bill.
