What this result does not account for

  • Results are a model, not a quotation — an institution's own figures govern.
  • Every input is an assumption; change one and the answer changes with it.
  • Rounding is applied only at the display layer, so totals may differ by a cent from a statement that rounds each line.

In short: RV loans stretch to twenty years, which keeps payments low and equity negative. A $120,000 RV with 20% down at 7.99% costs $802.39 monthly, but after ten years you still owe $66,162.58 against a vehicle worth $41,841.41 — $24,321.17 underwater.

Formula

value = price × (1 − depreciation)years  ·   equity = value − outstanding balance

Depreciation compounds geometrically while amortisation is slow early on, which is what opens the gap on long terms.

Worked Example

  1. Size the loan. $120,000 less 20% = $96,000.00.
  2. Price the payment. At 7.99% over 240 months, $802.39.
  3. Amortise ten years. The balance is still $66,162.58.
  4. Depreciate ten years. At 10% a year the RV is worth $41,841.41.
  5. Read the gap. $24,321.17 underwater after a decade of payments.

Analyst note. A twenty-year term on an asset depreciating 10% a year is structurally unsound: after ten years and $96,286.80 of payments you are still $24,321.17 short of clear. A ten-year term costs $1,164.24 a month — $361.85 more — but halves total interest to $43,708.52 and clears the debt while the vehicle still holds value. The long term buys affordability today and negative equity for a decade.

Strengths & Limits Of This Model

Where this engine is strong

  • Runs entirely in your browser — no figure you type is transmitted or stored.
  • Shows the full working, so every number can be traced and challenged.
  • Free, unmetered and free of affiliate incentives.

Where it stops

  • Generalised assumptions cannot capture every individual circumstance.
  • Jurisdiction-specific rules and mid-year changes may not be reflected.
  • A model output is not a substitute for a professional review of your position.

Risk & accuracy notice. Figures produced here are estimates derived from the inputs you supply. They are not a forecast, an offer, or a guarantee of any outcome, and no result should be read as a promise of future performance. Rates, thresholds and statutory rules change, and your own circumstances may differ materially from the assumptions modelled.

Practical Use Cases

Choosing a term rather than accepting the longest

Dealers quote the twenty-year payment because it is the smallest. The ten-year comparison shows what that convenience costs. Compare structures with the Loan Comparison Calculator.

Planning to trade in later

Negative equity at trade-in is rolled into the next loan, compounding the problem. Check your position at three, five and seven years before assuming you can exit.

Budgeting full-time RV living

Storage falls away but campground fees, fuel and maintenance rise. Adjust the running costs and read the true monthly figure, then test it with the Debt To Income Calculator.

Methodology & Editorial Standards

The payment amortises the price less deposit over the selected term, which for recreational vehicles commonly extends to fifteen or twenty years on higher-value units. Depreciation is applied geometrically at the stated annual rate; motorhomes typically lose twenty to thirty percent in the first year and around ten percent annually thereafter, with towables holding value somewhat better. The equity position compares the depreciated value against the amortised balance at the chosen date, both of which are computed rather than estimated. Running costs cover storage, insurance and routine maintenance; fuel, campground fees, registration and the substantial cost of tyres and roof maintenance on older units are excluded. The engine implements the standard published formula for this calculation. Inputs are validated for domain and sign before evaluation, and any undefined case returns an em-dash rather than a spurious value.

Computation runs in IEEE-754 double precision at full internal precision; rounding to two decimal places occurs strictly at the display layer, so no cumulative drift enters the result. All monetary outputs use accounting presentation — grouped thousands, two decimals, negatives in parentheses — so figures can be transcribed directly into a model or working paper. Division-by-zero and out-of-domain inputs return an em-dash rather than a misleading number.

This engine was reconciled against an independent reference implementation and hand-verified for the worked example above before release. Our full five-stage review process is published on the About Us page.

RV Loan Calculator — 20 Expert FAQs

20 analyst-written answers to the questions practitioners actually ask — optimised for voice and answer-engine retrieval.

How long can an RV loan be?

Up to twenty years on higher-value motorhomes, sometimes longer. The long term keeps the payment at $802.39 but leaves you $24,321.17 underwater at year ten.

How fast do RVs depreciate?

Motorhomes typically lose twenty to thirty percent in year one and about ten percent annually thereafter. Towables hold value better, which materially improves the equity picture.

Should I take a shorter RV loan?

If affordable, decisively yes. Ten years costs $361.85 more monthly but saves $52,863.91 of interest and clears the debt while the vehicle still has value.

Why am I underwater on my RV?

Because depreciation compounds faster than a twenty-year amortisation retires principal. This is structural to the product, not bad luck, and a larger deposit is the main defence.

What down payment do RV lenders want?

Typically 10% to 20%. Twenty percent here still leaves you underwater at ten years, which tells you how aggressive the depreciation curve is.

Can I deduct RV loan interest?

Often yes, if the RV has sleeping, cooking and toilet facilities and qualifies as a second home. It must be secured by the RV itself, and only one second home qualifies.

Are RV loan rates higher than car loans?

Usually by one to three points, reflecting longer terms, larger balances and a thinner resale market. Credit union pricing is frequently the most competitive.

What does it cost to keep an RV?

$1,227.39 monthly here all-in against a $802.39 payment. Storage, insurance and maintenance add $425 before you drive anywhere or pay a single campground fee.

Is it cheaper to buy used?

Substantially, since the steepest depreciation has already occurred. The trade-off is maintenance on ageing roofs, seals and appliances, which can be expensive and urgent.

Can I live in an RV full time?

Yes, though many lenders and insurers require disclosure and price differently for full-time use. Storage disappears but campground fees typically exceed it.

What happens if I trade in while underwater?

The negative equity is rolled into the new loan, so you finance the shortfall plus the new vehicle. This is how borrowers end up owing far more than any RV is worth.

Should I finance through the dealer?

Get a credit union pre-approval first. Dealer finance is convenient and frequently marked up, and RV dealerships earn substantially from financing and add-ons.

Is this rv loan calculator free to use?

Yes. It is free, requires no account, and has no usage limits. ApexConverter is funded by contextual advertising, never by selling user data.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The engine runs as Vanilla JavaScript inside your browser under our Zero-Server Client-Side Execution model. Your figures are computed locally and are never transmitted, logged, or stored.

How accurate is this calculator?

It applies the standard closed-form formula in IEEE-754 double precision, rounding only at the display layer. The engine is reconciled against an independent reference implementation before release.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The interface is mobile-first with numeric keypad hints and is tested down to a 320-pixel viewport with no horizontal scrolling.

Can I use it offline?

Largely, yes. Because computation is client-side, the page continues to calculate without a network connection once it has loaded.

Which currency does it use?

Amounts display in US$ accounting format, but the underlying mathematics is currency-agnostic. The result is identical in any currency, so simply read the figures in your own.

Why does a result show an em-dash?

An em-dash indicates the calculation is not defined for the inputs given — typically a division by zero or a value outside the valid domain. We show a dash rather than a misleading number.

How do I report an error?

Email apexconverter.praxiscalc@gmail.com with the tool URL, your exact inputs, the output received and the output you expected. Verified mathematical errors are patched within 72 hours.
